Default defragmenting

My computer originally had Windows 98 and I upgraded to
Windows ME. I haven't defragged as frequently as I
should have and am experiencing significant times for
applications to open. When I start the defragging
process, 3 hours can pass by with no defragmenting
completed. Why is nothing being completed? I have a 4
GB Compaq presario.

Have you tried doing it in safe mode?

Your slow computer may have nothing to do with tardy defragging.....

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:

http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

You need to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and close everything thats
running until only systray and explorer are left. You'll
then be able to defrag, hopefully without any problems.
