Need to get windows back...
Hi,
I have just (for the first time ever) reformatted the C drive on my sons pc. I followed all the details to the letter. It looks like it has reformatted but how do I get back to Windows. I presume I am in dos (have black screen with A:\) I assume this is asking me for a prompt. But this is where I am stuck. This is my first time in dos (and I think now my last!) can you tell me how I get back to windows please (98). Thanks. |

you Must have a boot disk with cdrom support, When you do boot from that
floppy disk, insert the Windows CDROM in the cdrom drive type [Drive]: where drive is the single letter of the cdrom drive and do not forget the colon setup On re-installing windows you will only have basic vga video and most of your hardware will not work, you have to re-install all the hardware drivers for sound, graphic-card printer monitor modem cable-modem usb2 firewire motherboard power-management scanner card-reader. If you do not have the hardware drivers for the computer you will have to find the original cds, or download the correct drivers from the manufacturers web sites Then you will have to go to windows update and install all the relevant updates Then you will have to install all the software packages to the pc Usually considered better to find out how and gather all the needed software, before you start -- Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de spybot http://security.kolla.de AVG free antivirus http://www.grisoft.com Panda online AntiVirus scan http://www.pandasoftware.com/ActiveScan/ Catalog of removal tools http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/utilities/ Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts file http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm links provided as a courtesy, read all instructions on the pages before use Grateful thanks to the authors/webmasters "Marsha" wrote in message ... | Hi, | I have just (for the first time ever) reformatted the C | drive on my sons pc. You may even be able to just stick the Windows CD in the
drive when you boot up (make sure it is set as the Primary Boot device in BOIS). Then select the Windows Setup option. |

Need to get windows back...
Thanks both of you for that, it turned out my cd rom
wasnt playing so I managed to load via my cdrw. Now the next problem (oh my I will learn the hard way!). Having got windows back I have the following problem with hardware...... everything seems to have loaded on 'plug and play' except 1.a pci multimeader audio device and pci card. Prompts come up telling me to install the drivers (as windows 98 cannot find them. I thought I could download them from the internet (having tried every disc I have) but although there is a modem.... 2.it has not been picked up by windows. I have tried installing this with all the discs I have, but none seems relevant or helpful. I actually ventured inside the machine and found the modem but there is nothing on it except 'made in China' and VRM V1.2 I have tried searching the net but nothing helps. Are the two things related? Is the PCI thing the same thing as a modem? What would you suggest I do now? (except never venture this far again!!) Hope you can help (not too technical stuff please) thanks again.
