I have a computer in our company that locks up when trying
to open windows explorer, my computer, my documents, etc.
I can use internet explorer to get to these items. I can
start in safe mode and I have no problems opening windows
explorer. It is only in normal mode. I have tried
restoring older verisons of the registry file. I have
reinstalled windows on top of the old windows. Does anyone
have any suggestions.

Something that loads in normal mode but not in safe mode is probably the
reason.

I tried all of the suggestions that was stated in the
Claen-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98. This is also a
intermittent problem. On on boot up it might work and
then on the next boot up it will lock up. I imported
another registry file from a similar pc and it still locks
up.

Did you disable *everything* from starting at boot and did it still lock up?
If so, I would give up on troubleshooting, format the drive and load the
system clean. If the PC does not lock up, start loading the patches but
don't do too many in case a patch is the problem. Then load the software
and try booting the PC a few times after each installation to see if
conflicting software is the problem.

I did disable everything and it still locked up, sometimes
it would shutdown and restart the pc automatically.
Reformating was my next logical step. I just need to copy
all of users favorites and some settings so they can be
restored onto the reformated system. Thanks for all your
suggestions.

If a clean install doesn't do it, then you must suspect hardware as the
culprit. Please let us know if you get it sorted out.

I do not suspect a hardware issue with any of the cards or
motherboard (it maybe a problem with the hard drive that
is installed). I installed an old hard drive that was
already setup with windows (this from pc that were
upgraded to a larger HD). This hard drive worked fine. I
was able to browse with windows explorer. I will let you
know as soon as I reformat and get it running again.
Thanks,

Robert W. Starrett

Finally narrowed it down to a faulty video driver. I was
able to download a driver from the manufacturer. It was
an older driver than the Windows driver. But it works
now. If I install the newer Windows driver it locks up.
So at this time we are using the older driver and it seems
to be working fine. Thanks for your time and effort in
helping me resolve this issue.
