Un known Un wanted programs in windows/C
I see all these what look to be programs in my "C/Windows" folder.
I did a google search for most of them, but did not come up with much of anything. I'm thinking of just deleting them. Do you think it is safe to do so? AKDeInstall, wnu_61, MirarSetup_876073, whCC-GIANT, VapeG22, win3208780727703, uninst104, uni_ehhhh, Cmuninst, Grpconv, Asd, Ipconfig, Tuneup, Twunk_16, Twunk_32, Thank You, Tony |

BTW, go to view/options and ENABLE file extensions. Without knowing file extensions you are much more in the dark. MS makes the default "disabled" to make thing "easier" but it is also extremely dangerous. IOW, whCC-GIANT.txt is nothing, while whCC-GIANT.scr or whCC- GIANT.exe could be a deadly virus. Do you have an anti-virus program or Spybot? Run it and see what it tells you. The "twunks" can be deleted unless you use TWAIN for scanning, but it won't make any real difference since the files are small. You have to get used to a lot of weird stuff in your Windows directories. It's part of the "we do everything for you because we think you are too stupid to manage your machine" approach. As is disabling the file extensions and dozens of other dangerous and dumb things MS is inflicting on users. Huge topic. |

I'm thinking of just deleting them. Do you think it is safe to do so? If you are unsure whether an unwanted file is junk or malware or an essential piece of Windows, before you delete it segregate it, i.e. in a DOS box CD.. CD.. MD SEG to make a new folder /SEG and log to it via CD SEG then MOVE C:\WINDOWS\FILENAM*.* because this will write a copy to /SEG and remove FILENAM*.* from /Windows (or any other folder you put in the command.) Then reboot. 1. If you get an error message that Win98 lacks some essential file, you can use DOS to put it back where it belongs. 2. If Windows runs OK, you can later DELTREE C:/SEG and all its contents, when convenient to you. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
