Default Battery Indicator

I have an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 440 laptop that I keep as an emergency
backup for internet access in case the main machine falls over. I power it
up on a regular basis to ensure all is OK. However, I have noticed that the
battery indicator icon that used to reside in the lower right tool bar,
along with the Antivirus/Firewall icons is no longer there. The power symbol
is there but not the battery one. Is this a Windows option and if so how do
I enable it or is it a Toshiba plug-in?
Thanks
Alan

Look in Start / Settings / Control Panel / Power options for a setting to
show the icon in the task bar.

Yes, that is there, but it only provides the mains lead icon not the one for
the battery.

It should change to the battery icon when you are using the battery.

Interesting. It appears to not change then, even when I remove the mains
charger from the PC, let it run on the battery and then reinsert, the icon
does not change. Any clues as to what I should be checking/looking for?

Check that polling isn't disabled (under the advanced tab in the Power
applet in Control Panel). Otherwise, check the APM device in device
manager, and, if necessary, re-install it from the manufacturer's
installation CD.

There isn't a polling option under advanced on my pc for me to check! I have
checked for the APM and Toshiba don't offer it on their download pages for
Windows 98. The PC is an ex company one so I don't have any CDs. Plenty of
files in the CABS part of Explorer but nothing springs to light for me to
use to reinstall.
