No sympathy please but here's my situation.
I have 8 pcs ethernet'd together using an 8 port Cat5 switch. The pcs run Netbuie for file and print sharing as well as tcp/ip for dialup proxy server running on one pc and also for some multi-user games in-house. I am waiting on a satallite installer to come install a dish to change from dialup to sat. To facilitate hooking up the sat's modem I've bought a router with Wan and 4 ethernet ports. I took one of the pcs off the switch, connected the switch to the router and plugged in that same pcs to the router. As far as the ethernet is concerned all pcs still see each other and everything works as before. Now, the part I need to know. Sat dish installer won't be by for two weeks. I'm off to rad/chemo treatment starting next week. I'd like the sat dish installer to basically have as easy a time of it as possible. I assume he'll do no more than connect a laptop to the sat modem to get it working and likely have nothing to do with reconnecting it to the router and getting all the pcs changed to use that connection. I'd like to know before hand what I'll have to do to have the pcs that currently use the proxy server to instead use the router. tia, Paul |

The proxy is just another wrench thrown in. A short answer might be that the installer will likely hook up the SAT and check the modem and router. IF you have allowed them to access your computer, the installer MIGHT proceed further with the setup. IF however, you pre-setup the router and other computers PRIOR to the SAT installation, then it should just be a plug it in, turn it on situation. The main issues will be your firewall setup/configuration, router configuration, and whether you have static or auto assigned IP addresses. If other computers are using a proxy and you intend to remove it, then the other computers will receive their settings from the router, IF that's the way you set it up. Make sure you remove all references to the proxy [including in any browsers] in your firewalls, modify the firewalls to allow the local network addressing [static or assigned], and modify or remove your hosts file {if you're using one].
