No, you read it correctly, I mixed things up and together without notice. I was
more on track of disable/uninstall. I always prefer disable as a start testing
point and then uninstall/reinstall. If no help, time to start digging. I don't
think PPP or others of such can be disabled in the BIOS, can they? I've never
seen an integrated modem on a board

No, I didn't mean to suggest PPP would be disabled in BIOS, only that an integrated
modem or NIC could be.

With the information I've gathered here, I think I will do the following:

1. With nothing uninstalled, I will turn the modem log on and see anything
is trying to start any dialup session. I will also get the route print.
2. If nothing seems to be wrong with the modemlog and route print and I
still lose the internet signal, I will then try uninstalling DUN.

Hope everything will become ok after I've done step 2.

Your cable (?) modem may be able to tell you something about your

default gateway, then it wouldn't happen until the dialup connection
was successful in adding a new gateway. If the cable was unplugged, a

card with updated drivers if possible. Also, is there an alternative
network card you can try it with?

It sounds rather scary to remove and reinstall the cable network card as I
will risk not being able to use the internet at all. I can live with not
being able to use the faxmodem, but not without the internet. I'm not too
familiar with the computer hardware, so I prefer tweaking things on the
software level (not including removing and reinstalling drivers though, it
usually leads to more problem rather than solving them for me).

I don't have another network card to try.

networking if you want to try that. It has in itself resolved many

The connection is dropped again! and it is like only an hour after I've gone
online. It seems I get more often offline at nights.

So the modem was indeed turned on, and I did not recall I've turned the
modem on last week, and I don't think I've set the log to be on either

Just download the Win98SE version? How do I check whether I have actually
already the latest version of the driver?

And I've just checked the System Properties. Should the network card name
appear under "Network Adapter"? If it is, I can just see a "32-bit PCI Fast
Ethernet Adapter" and can't find the Realtek one. Where should I look?

The card was installed very very quickly by the broadband guy. He may
probably just have plugged the card in and let win98se make use of the
default driver supplied with windows.

It's not this modem you need to be concerned with. Forget what the
tech support said. Look at what logging is available on the cable
modem. That might provide an answer.

The device manager (Right click My Computer - Properties - Device
Manager) will tell you the dates of the installed drivers.

If that's the only network adaptor in there then that's the one. If
you try and update with the wrong driver, win98 will tell you that it
can't find the correct driver file for your network card. It won't zap
what you already have unless there is something better to update it
with.
