mcafee quickclean
I accidentally deleted an important file using quickclean. As a result
when windows loads, I only get my background, then I get a windows explorer page fault. Does anybody know how I can go into dos and restore to before my accident. I have twice tried to reinstall windows 98 and I get the same problem. thank you Seth |

Do you know what file you deleted, or did you delete more than just one?
Do you get the same blank desktop and error message if you start in Safe Mode? -Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. -Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If so, follow the procedures here, or skip down to the next link and follow those: Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install Internet Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=kb;en-us;249191 If those procedures do not help, have a look he Recovering From a Failed Internet Explorer Upgrade in Windows 98: http://www.cs.bsu.edu/~gjjones/admin...nd ows98.html or http://tinyurl.com/r5ba Especially this section at the end: "If you still have boot problems after you reboot, you should use the command prompt to edit the c:\windows\system.ini file. On the command line type edit c:\windows\system.ini. "Once it is open, change the line shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. What you are doing here is changing the default shell (that is having problems) from the Windows Explorer to the old Windows Program Manager shell. "Reboot Windows. It should now successfully boot with no errors into an empty Program Manager shell. Use the File | Run | Browse drop down menu selection to browse to c:\program files\internet explorer and launch ie5setup.exe or ie6setup.exe (depending on what is there). Do a custom install and check all the Bold faced options. When the setup program alerts you that these files are already installed, tell it to reinstall all of the files. "When the Internet Explorer Setup program is done and reboots, hit the F8 key to bring up a Boot Menu. Choose Command Prompt and boot to the command prompt. Once there, type edit c:\windows\system.ini and, once it is open, change the line shell=progman.exe back to shell=explorer.exe. Save and exit the file. You have now set the shell back to the original value." -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "seth" wrote in message ups.com... I am not sure exactly which program I deleted. I have tried all of the
solutions that you and the pages you linked to suggested. No luck. I cannot install ie.6 because it is missing components(SHLWAPI.DLL:437.) I have tried to restore this like I did the other files but cannot because the file has an invalid extension.I cannot install my old ie5 from my cd because I have a better version already installed. The error message that I get when windows tries to load and my background is showing is that explorer has caused an invalid page fault at explorer.exe Thank you very much for your help! Seth |

I do not understand....what invalid extension? The file you mention is shlwapi.dll,
the 437 is not part of the file name at all. What is the exact error message you receive concerning these "missing components", and when are you getting the message exactly? If you follow the procedure at http://tinyurl.com/r5ba particularly the section at the end, and choose a 'Custom' installation of IE6, then select only those components that you had previously, what happens? Do you have IE6 on a CD? Another option is to start with ProgMan as the shell, then use the Run dialog and paste in this command: RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV.DLL,IE6Maintenance In the box that appears, select "Restore the previous Windows configuration", then when complete and rebooted, install IE6 SP1 fresh, from CD if you have it. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "seth" wrote in message oups.com... Seth I apologise, I tried to run ie6 and it did not work. Windows said that the SHLWAPI.DLL file was missing. That is when I got that message. I have retried to move the files mentioned on the windows help link you gave me this time from both the c:Cabs and the Windows disk. SFC says that the files have been moved, but I.E 6 cannot install because it says that it is missing the uninstall file. I only have ie5 on cd and it will not work because I have ie6 on. Program manager causes a page fault when I try and run it as a shell. I have tried to run ie6setup.exe from dos and am told that I am missing files them as well. I have tried all the options on all of the links that you sent me and explorer always aborts it's installation due to a missing file. I have a gateway system restoration CD. What will the install/delete Windows function do. Previous to my posting of this message I tried the install windows function twice. The program sped through the options, giving me no time to choose and the original explorer fault in explorer.exe still happened. Thank you very much! Seth |

Seth Extract SHLWAPI.DLL from the Windows cab files, using the "Extract one file" option of System File Checker (SFC), then reinstall IE6. What exactly are the error messages you receive, and where during the attempt to reinstall IE do you get them? If you are getting an error message when trying to use ProgMan as the shell, I am not sure what at this point is wrong with the system. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm |

Thank you very much for your help! After extracting the file you suggested. Windows would not restart due to registry problems. I believe that there were severe issues. Perhaps windows was still looking at the old .dll files that were there instead of the new ones. either way out of time necessity I went ahead and deleted an reinstalled windows. I thank you very much for your time and help. Seth |
