Default having to run in Safemode

I am running Windows 98 on a laptop (IBM Thinkpad 380
ED). When I start up my computer, it is telling
me: "Windows did not finish loading on first attempt" and
then i have to startup in "safemode". I can not figure
out why this is happening. Also, my D: drive is not
being recognized. Can anyone help me?

What is your D: drive, CDRom? If so, go to Control panel, system,
performance tab: is there any comment about MSDos compatibility mode?

Is your D: drive the CD-ROM?
Did you install any software, hardware, or updates prior to this happening?

While you are in Safe Mode, open Device Manager and remove all items listed in the
CDROM category (assuming that the D: drive is your CD-ROM).

Go he
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm and click the link on the left for "Remove NOIDE
Flag"

Direct download of the .reg file, in a .zip file
http://aumha.org/downloads/noide.zip

Download the file, then extract the .reg file to your Desktop; right-click the
NOIDE.REG file and click Merge on the menu that appears, and OK to the confirmation
message.
Restart the computer.

If you still have the problem, boot into Safe Mode, then follow the procedures here
to try a clean boot, and if the problem goes away, re-emable items till you find
which is causing it:

If he is booting into Safe Mode only, Performance tab will *always* show
compatibility mode in Safe Mode. I am not clear from the post, if he is getting
into normal mode eventually, or not.

Use NOTEPAD.EXE and open MSDOS.SYS (You might have to change its attributes
if its set to read only!).

Change the line BootFailSafe = 0

If it is BootFailSafe = 1 then you will always boot to Safe Mode.
