Window 98 DVD drives

I installed 1 DVD reader & 1 DVD writer, but when the PC booted up, Explorer
shows 8 (eight) drives for each of the 2 devices!
Have removed all of them, removed all but one, but on re-boot all 16 drvies
always re-appear.
Anyone any ideas?

1. You did not say whether they work or not.
2. This is characteristic not of a disk reader
but a multifunction card reader on USB. (Mine does
not show at reboot when empty: but when
I put in one memory card four drives appear.)

Boot into safe mode and remove all of them while in safe mode. Then close
Device manager and say no when prompted to restart. Exit and shut down and
after a few seconds, start the computer. Often this process allows a
confused system to correctly identify the devices. You must remove ALL
devices in the category that is messed up, not just the extra ones.
