Default upgrading from 98 to xp

hi,

i am having alot of trouble upgrading from win 98... i
tried it a few times, the last time was last night.

i got a dialog box that said there was a missing file and
it gave 3 choices, retry...skip... exit, i retried every
time i got that box. there were so many files i didn't
write them down except for the first one:

c:\$win_nt$.~ls\1386\system32\ntdll.dll

most went in after retrying but there were at least 2 i
skipped. the install never finished... i got a blue
screen that said:

stop:
c0000221 unknown hard error\system root\system32\ntdll.dll

ok, so does anyone have any idea what all this means and
what i should do?

i am running win 98 version 4.10.1998
i have 2 hard drives, one 20 and the other 100
ram is 512
pc has athlon amd 1333

i didn't install my av

i unplugged my printer

i can't figure this out and i am going nuts.... please
please help me.

thanks,
frank

Having the "Owners Manual" for the Mother Board will help
alot here.
Go into MB Bios and dissable anything that will not be
needed to load the XP OS. Like USB ports, onboard
modem, fast ethernet adaptor, onboard audio. Every thing
that may be listed that you know you will not use for an
install.
These features I've mentioned may need XP drivers before
XP will install. Which may be causing the load failure.
IF and once you get XP to fully load. You can go back to
Bios and enable each one at a time and see if the OS will
recognize them and load drivers. If not? It will say so
and you will know what you need.
I had a fairly new machine do this. It was the stupid
modem causing it. Disabled the modem in Bios and once I
got XP to load. I put the MB CD in and found the XP update
drivers for the modem.
