Win98 Orig.Disk
I bought a used Toshiba notebook that had Win98 on it and it worked fine
for several weeks. Recently I started having problems during boot-up that kept getting progressively worse. It finally got to the point of not loading 98 at all, with error messages stating various files were missing or damaged. Tried everything to repair with no luck. I still had a 98 upgrade disk and the key code from years back so I decided to re-format and start over. But I can't re-install 98 because during the setup, it calls for the original 98 disk. It will not accept the 98 upgrade CD for the installation. Microsoft says "tough", we don't support 98 anymore. I didn't pay much for the computer and due to it's age, the processor speed and amount of ram limits it to 98. Does anybody know of a way to get it back up and running? Don't feel like I'm beating MS out of a dime since it came with 98 and I paid for the upgrade once on a computer that has long been scrapped. Any help would sure be appreciated. Bob |

What exactly is the message you get when you try to use the upgrade disk?
Are you sure it's an upgrade disk, and not an update (the update disk requires Windows 98 to be installed). -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Robert Hahn" wrote in message ... Do you have the restore CD from Toshiba that should have shipped with the
system? If so, use it. If not, then search for a retail "full version" of Win98. You can usually find this on eBay or using a PriceGrabber search. The upgrade simply won't install if you do not have another version of Windows installed or on CD or disk to prove that you are entitled to use the upgrade version which retailed for 1/2 the price of the full version. It's a little late for this but if you had not formatted, then the upgrade would have seen the original installation on your computer and you could have installed to a new folder then later deleted the corrupt Windows and Program Files folders. Bob to use a win98 upgrade disk you need to have a previous operating system if you have a win95cd that should work as a qualifying product possibly even win3.1 here is an old trick that *might* work however (at least is used to work with the win95 upgrades) from dos...just make a windows folder on your C: drive and with a text editor just make a dummy win.com file and place it in the windows folder worth a try anyway |
