Default Windows Updates question

Are the updates suppose to just pile up in my add/remove program panel
or should they overwrite one another as I add em? Cause now all I see
is a bunch of updates.

They accumulate.

Yeuch. That's a bit like never emptying your toilet at home. Tacky. What are
you supposed to do when it's full, change houses?

It would be very nice if some system of automatic cleaning or archiving
could take place, or even if Microsoft could give us some guidelines about
it.

I can see that if one had to restore, theoretically it might be useful to
keep updates, but with a repair re-install, do these updates get integrated
automatically? They certainly wouldn't for a clean re-install, surely.

Bad analogy, because there's nothing filthy in them.

It would be very nice if some system of automatic cleaning or
archiving could take place, or even if Microsoft could give us some
guidelines about it.

Leave them! Don't get rid of any of them. That's the guideline.

Were Win98 still in development so that a Service Pack were coming down the
road, it would subsume these ande they would all disappear as separate
items, but would remain as part of the SP.

I can see that if one had to restore, theoretically it might be
useful to keep updates, but with a repair re-install, do these

No, they don't usually. You need to hit Windows Update again. They are
present in Add/Remove because they are actively installed at the moment.

Which brings me to my next question, why does this latest update
(kb891711) show up in the running programs panel when I hit
ctrl-alt-del as opposed to the others that dont. It's even in the
start up menu.

This particular one launches an executable.
