Default Can't use YouTube

I used to be able to watch videos on YouTube in spite of the
messages telling me my browser (Firefox) was not supported.
(That was even before upgrading to Flash 9.0.277.0.) But now,
if I try to watch any video on YouTube, using either Firefox
(2.0.0.20) or Opera (9.27), my entire system slows to a crawl,
and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of the browser. Is there a
cure, one which does not involve abandoning Win98SE?

You could try to use Firefox/Bon Echo 2.0.0.22pre. It is somewhat newer
than the .20 version and still runs under Windows 9X.

I use Opera 9.64 don't know what starts when the the video starts,
maybe Adobe Flash 9, but I found that *if* I can click on starting the
video fast enough, youtube seems to bypass checking my browser and
instead starts showing the video.

Then I simply go to Opera's Cache, download the fideo, and watch it at
leisure using SoThink, which is an awesome video player. Seems to run
everything.

I posted the following here in this newsgroup on June 23:

---------------------------

Some websites now require that you have Flash version 10 instead of
version 9.

Flash 10 won't install on win-98 unless you have installed a third-party
API helper like KernelEx.

However, a simple modification done to the main Flash DLL (NPSWF32.dll)
will make it appear that you have flash 10 when you really have flash 9.

The modified file is available he

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/7/...82/NPSWF32.ZIP

The password to unzip that file is "a" (no quotes).

After you unzip it, rename it to NPSWF32.dll.

Copy it over-top your existing file with the same name. It should be
located he

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH

Before you do that, you should first update your windows 98 or ME system
to the latest flash version 9, which can be done he

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/f...h_player_9.exe

Note: This is the download link for the Netscape version of the Flash
player, not the IE version.

This is the download link for flash version 9.0.277.0. The modified DLL
mentioned above is based on this version of flash. It's internal
version number has been changed to 10.0.45.2.

This modification has been tested using firefox version 2.0.0.20 on
websites such as google street view and youtube and it works perfectly.

Google streetview no longer works unless you have flash 10, regardless
what your browser is. This is one way to correct the problem.

Note: This modified flash DLL does not seem to work when viewing any
video file on the msnbc.com website.

Addendum:

If using Firefox 2.0.0.20, you might want to alter the user-agent string
that Firefox reports to the destination servers that you are surfing
to. To do this, enter "about:config" in the Firefox address bar. On
the "Filter" bar, enter "agent".

You should see something called "general.useragent.extra.firefox", and
it's value should say "Firefox/2.0.0.20". If you don't see that item,
you can create it. Right-click on it, and select "modify", and change
it to read "Firefox/3.0.0.20". In other words, change it's major
version number from 2 to 3. This will trick some websites to not
complain that you are running an older / unsupported browser.

The following is from he

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1309...lex-45-beta-2/

--------------------------
Despite changing Windows version in compatibility tab some programs
complain about wrong system version. Example: Adobe Flash Player 10.

Solution:
Create "xp.reg" file in notepad with following contents:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CurrentVersion"="5.1"

Double click on "xp.reg" file.
Install the program.
Create "unxp.reg" file in notepad with following contents:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CurrentVersion"=-

Double click on "unxp.reg" file.
-----------------------

Unicows.dll (which version, which directory it's in) might also play a
role, but I don't have a clear idea of that right now.

I still say your problem is noscript. Your system is probably bogged
down by several anti-this and block-that and firewall junk, which
complicates things from a diagnostic point of view.

Hey 98 Guy,

Making some progress here.. Now have Flash WIN 10,0,12,36 installed.

Can now play some vids on YouTube. But only some!!

With your configuration, can you play, for example, the file at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dGS1...feature=hp_SLN

I get this message:

----------
This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your
country on copyright grounds.
----------

If you ask me, Youtube should not accept videos that put geographic
restrictions on viewability.

Note the following:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/...d323c8de&hl=en

Some people there are saying that Channel 4 doesn't want people *in* the
UK to see these video's on youtube. Since I am not in the UK, it's not
clear if this is an error in geo-location sensing or not.

There is a firefox addon called Phzilla, which can be downloaded from
he

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3239/

A youtube video that shows Phzilla in action is he

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT9ZfcgA-5U

Phzilla allows you to bypass country-based rights restrictions somehow.
But it won't install on Firefox 2.0.0.20 - only version 3.

Another technique (which doesn't seem to work any more) was to modify
the URL as follows:

Original URL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dGS1...feature=hp_SLN

Modified URL:
http://www.youtube.com/v/7dGS1jqbNwc&feature=hp_SLN

Doing that brought up what looked like the first frame of the video (a
bunch of people - looks like 13 people - most of them female, sitting in
a room, with the title "Big Brother's Little Brother").

The video screen is correctly formatted, with the play button in the
middle of the picture. But when I press the play button, I get this
message:

-----------------
This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your
country on copyright grounds.
-----------------

In doing some research on this, I found these other suggestions:

You can start using Tor software - http://www.torproject.org/, using
which you can change your IP to US based ips. Tor also has some really
handy firefox addons like Torbutton and foxtor.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3606/

I've also seen something called Vidalia (a tor client I think).

If you have a good download speed, you can also download the video onto
your computer and then watch it, a service like keepvid is perfect to
download youtube videos.

http://keepvid.com/

Finally, there's also the suggestion to use a UK-based web proxy, but in
the dozen or so attempts I made so far, I've yet to find one that
actually works with your sample youtube video.
