Default Antivirus software for 98

What type of antivirus software do people using 98 use now that Norton
and AVG no longer support 98? My 98 machine still outperforms my XP
significantly.

Don't be a jack-ass by multi-posting.

Why didn't you cross-post instead?

There are no "drive-by" vulnerabilities that affects Windows 98. Never
has been.

And most of the malware that tricks users to perform the installation
doesn't run on Windows 98.

So right off the bat, the need for AntiVirus software for Windows 98 is
basically zero, and has been for at least the past 3 or 4 years.

Norton Anti-Virus 2002 is probably the best and least resource-intensive
AV program for win-98, and it can still be updated by downloading the
Symantec Intellgent Updater package. This brings NAV 2002 completely
up-to-date with the most recent virus definitiona and scan engine. If
you can't find NAV-2002 on a torrent and you really want it - let me
know. I can put it on a torrent or a download site.

If you are seeking an antivirus package to perform on-demand scanning of
suspicous files (that you might acquire from the net) then I suggest
that instead of seeking an AV app, that you submit suspicious files to
virustotal.com where they will be scanned by 40 different AV programs.

My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly.

Because Windows 98 runs all apps in i86 Ring-0, has no cumbersome
privledge or security accounts model, and runs on the faster FAT32 file
system, it's a natural result that it's a faster operating system
compared to the bloated NT-based OS's.

Guy,
Thank you for the reply. Sorry about the multi-posting. I really
like my 98 machine better than my xp machine. My only complaint is
that my 98 machine is only a 433mz and is very slow in playing youtube
videos. Do you know of any way to improve that? Also, I am using
IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that they will not work on
IE6 shortly. Any advice on that? Thanks again for your help.

Well, those quit support long ago.

AVAST supposedly will continue supplying defs for its 4.8 version
through this year {supposedly}, though it supplies no support nor newer
versions;

several PAID AV providers offer 9X versions as part of their packages;

ClamAV is free
http://www.clamwin.com/;

there are a couple of relatively unknown {as in not around during 9X
life} AV applications which I can provide no information or
recommendation on.

As for your browser issue mentioned elsewhere, try Opera or one of the
browsers mentioned on evolt as supporting 9X:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?

NOTE: Flash will be an ongoing issue on your limited CPU and memory 9X
computer, as many sites now require version 10.

You might want to think about an alternative OS that supports the newer
Web requirements. You could even use one of the bootable/LiveCD OSs if
your system supports booting from a CD drive.

For probably $250 you could purchase a used pc (probably off-lease) at
your local surplus electronics store and install win-98 on it (assuming
it was made no later than 2005 or 2006).

Or look on e-bay, kijiji or craig's list for a used PC that dates to the
2004 or 2005 time-frame (or 2003 if you want to be on the safe side).
I'm assuming you're looking for a desktop PC - not a laptop.

Any desktop PC made during that time-frame will be compatible with
windows 98. If you don't have a win-98 CD, it's readily available on a
torrent.

The best you can do with your existing machine is to add more RAM (bring
it up to 512 mb) and maybe change the CPU to a faster one.

Also, I am using IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that
they will not work on IE6 shortly. Any advice on that?

You should have abandoned IE6 2 or 3 years ago and switched to Firefox.
Why didn't you?

You need to download Firefox version 2.0.0.20. That's the last version
that is compatible with a "standard" installation of Win-98, and I
really haven't come across any web-site or web-content that can't be
viewed or rendered with that version if Firefox.
