Default Win9x : Utility to dynamic mapping TEMP to memory ?

Hi,

I remember I have seen ( shareware, what a pitty )
small vxd based utility
providing dynamic memory mapping of TEMP ( or any ) dir.

It was ot static as ramdisk, neither create extra disk letter.
It allocates/frees memory if temp demand occurs/cancels.
If there is not enough memory, then excess is remapped
back to disk.

Unfortunately I cannot remember the name
and did found ( more times ) it or similar
free equivalent.

Does exist such free one ?
Or do anybody work on it ? :-) ?

I'm sure the MVP's will be opposed to such a thing, Striz. Windows wants
to manage memory. TEMP (or any) DIR is not memory, and probably it is
best to just keep your own eye on any DIR that concerns you, or keep
your virus scanner updated. To watch TEMP...

"START, Run, %TEMP%". It will put TEMP into your Taskbar. To keep it
there through a reboot...

First of all, this will allow you see in Explorer all files that have
the Hidden attribute...
"START, Settings, Folder Options, View tab", & bolt "Show all
files"; may as well uncheck "Hide file extensions..." too.

To know whether a file has that attribute, R-Clk it in Explorer, &
select "Properties". Alternatively...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Adv
anced
ShowAttribCol 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD. Value data: 1
ShowSuperHidden 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD: 1
PersistBrowsers 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD: 1

ShowAttribCol See Attributes listed in Explorer
ShowSuperHidden Well, I think I saw my first .htt after setting that.
PersistBrowsers An open folder will remain open after a reboot.

"ShowAttribCol" has no space in it's name, although it seems that way
with this font. (None of them do.) Type a "1" in "Value Data". It won't
look like a simple "1" in the right pane. If the column doesn't appear
immediately in Explorer, then re-boot.

1. "START button, Run"; Type "RegEdit" & Enter.
2. Click the plus (+) signs in the left pane starting at
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending at "Explorer".
3. Finally, click the key "Advanced" in the left pane.
4. In the right pane, R-Clk an empty area; point to "new"; select
"Dword value"; type or paste "PersistBrowsers" & Enter.
5. R-Clk "PersistBrowsers"; select "Modify", enter "1" in Value Data, &
click OK.
6. Do the other two, as desired, from step (4).
7. Close RegEdit & reboot, if it doesn't already show in Explorer.

Thank you, PCR, for yor long reply.

I of course know how manage my TEMP dir myself :-)

I do periodic clean TEMP by jv16 powertools.

What happens if an install routine stores files in %temp% to be
renamed/moved by wininit on the reboot? That will screw up the
install, as the needed files won't exist anymore.

Hm, interesting, I dis not think about it.
But, even not vramdir taken into account,
poople often deletes temp e.g. in autoexec.

Maybe You are right.

Does system expect %temp% content
is boot persistent ?
Are you sure the reboot part of installs
rely on it ?

I was just about to apologize, BUT I see Blanton has a concern. Right!
Don't wipe %TEMP%, until after a fresh reboot. (I believe you can put a
shortcut to a .bat (which is a .pif) into "C:\WINDOWS\Start
Menu\Programs\StartUp" to do it, IF you must.)

And don't start an MVP war around here!

Not for all content, but %temp% is sometimes used for installs. There
may be other reasons for not wanting to have it cleared. For example
my editor keeps a running backup in %temp%, which I can get at if
there is a power outage.

I'd also have to question whether it would be wise based on memory
considerations. You will be taking from the memory pool, and as a
consequence will be causing more paging to disk.

Are you sure the reboot part of installs
rely on it ?

Not all, but some. Wininit.ini is mainly for "in use" system files. Whether
the program uses the %temp% dir is up to the program.
