Ed wrote: Hey 98 Guy, Making some progress here.. Now have Flash WIN 10,0,12,36 installed. Can now play some vids on YouTube. But only some!! With your configuration, can you play, for example, the file at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dGS1...feature=hp_SLN I get this message: ---------- This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds. ---------- If you ask me, Youtube should not accept videos that put geographic restrictions on viewability. Note the following: http://www.google.com/support/forum/...d323c8de&hl=en Some people there are saying that Channel 4 doesn't want people *in* the UK to see these video's on youtube. Since I am not in the UK, it's not clear if this is an error in geo-location sensing or not. There is a firefox addon called Phzilla, which can be downloaded from he https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3239/ A youtube video that shows Phzilla in action is he http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT9ZfcgA-5U Phzilla allows you to bypass country-based rights restrictions somehow. But it won't install on Firefox 2.0.0.20 - only version 3. Another technique (which doesn't seem to work any more) was to modify the URL as follows: Original URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dGS1...feature=hp_SLN Modified URL: http://www.youtube.com/v/7dGS1jqbNwc&feature=hp_SLN Doing that brought up what looked like the first frame of the video (a bunch of people - looks like 13 people - most of them female, sitting in a room, with the title "Big Brother's Little Brother"). The video screen is correctly formatted, with the play button in the middle of the picture. But when I press the play button, I get this message: ----------------- This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds. ----------------- In doing some research on this, I found these other suggestions: You can start using Tor software - http://www.torproject.org/, using which you can change your IP to US based ips. Tor also has some really handy firefox addons like Torbutton and foxtor. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3606/ I've also seen something called Vidalia (a tor client I think). If you have a good download speed, you can also download the video onto your computer and then watch it, a service like keepvid is perfect to download youtube videos. http://keepvid.com/ Finally, there's also the suggestion to use a UK-based web proxy, but in the dozen or so attempts I made so far, I've yet to find one that actually works with your sample youtube video. OK, 98 Guy, Thanks for all those suggestions. I will try them out in due course. But, as you say, there may well be problems viewing some Channel 4 programs here in the UK. But on a more general point, when I try to view many other YouTube videos, I still continue to get the error message: " You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video. Download it from Adobe." This happens even though I have a real genuine version of Flash 10,0,12,36 installed. And when I click on the download link, it takes me to the Adobe page offering to install Adobe Flash Player version 9.0.277.0 which of course is the earlier version that I used to have!! It seems that I have probably reached the limits of my system's capabilities ;-(( Ed |

When you are on youtube, go to the bottom of the screen. At the very bottom will be some text that says Language, Location, and Safety Mode. What country does your Location say? But on a more general point, when I try to view many other YouTube videos, I still continue to get the error message: " You need to upgrade your Adobe Flash Player to watch this video. Download it from Adobe." I was getting that message when trying to watch your video through UK-based proxies. One possibility is some security features built into Flash known as "policy files". This page shows a list of various flash security whitepapers and explanations: http://www.flash-standard.com/devnet.../security.html I can't find anything useful (yet) in those documents, but I'm wondering if this is a side effect of a "cross-domain policy file". Can you view *any* youtube video? |

I used to be able to watch videos on YouTube I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd reply because I was fighting with the same hassles from Firefox. Stop being a dick-wad and download KernelEx from he http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/ Then you can install Flash 10.x on your win-98 system and watch all the you-tube you want, even with FF 2.0.0.20. Anyone running Windows-98 and not using KernelEx at this point is just being a dink. I'd like to tell Youtube what to do with their annoying "Browser needs updating BS. Download user-agent switcher: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59/ And then set your user-agent to Firefox 3.what-ever and you won't get the nag message. |

KernelEx is the best thing to come along for windows 98. I really only have one major question. What files in Win98se are changed or modified? The KernelEx installer changes 80 bytes in kernel32.dll to make it ready for new symbol resolve engine (KernelEx Core) and to disable platform checks of executables. No other system files are modified. I'm pretty sure it saves a backup copy in your \windows\sysbckup directory (or - it will create that directory and put a copy of your original kernel32.dll there). It has it's own un-install program that will restore your original file. Finally, will I really need to do all that tweaking in the registry, or is that only for specific programs? You might have to make one change in your registry to allow Flash 10 to install. Now, here's where I'm not sure which is the correct or necessary change to make. The instructions written in March 2009 state that this needs to be done: -------------------------- If this key does not exist, then create it: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion In that key, create a new string value and call it "CurrentVersion". For it's value, make it "5.1". -------------------------- What I had done in the past was this: ------------------------ Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion Change the value of the string called "Version" to "Windows NT" Change the value of the string called "VersionNumber" to "5.1" Remember - change the VALUE of those strings - don't change their NAMES by renaming them. To change their value, right-click on them and select MODIFY. ----------------------- So I'm pretty sure that one of the above changes needs to be made to the registry after KernelEx is installed to be able to install Flash verison 10. I can say that I've performed the second modification, and that enabled me to install Flash player version 10.1.102.64. The only requirement for KernelEx is that you have Microsoft Layer for Unicode (unicows.dll) present in your /windows/system directory. Here's where you get that file: Microsoft Layer for Unicode (MSLU) 1.1.3790.0 (UNICOWS.DLL) http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...42/unicows.exe I really only want to install Firefox 3.x and Flash 10. I dont see any need to upgrade anything else nor do I have any XP software that I want or need. I find that installing VLC (Videolan) is particulary useful and a more capable multi-media player than Windows Media Player. ====================== VLC media player VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework, that plays most multimedias files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. It is simple to use, yet very powerful and extendable. http://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/...2.exe/download |

I cant say anything bad about any of this. Its great !!!! Thanks No problem. One thing about Firefox. It's retaining every website I ever used. I did the "clear private data", clear cache, cookies, etc.... What file is storing this info? I want it removed. Clearing private data should have removed the history. I'm assuming this file is stored in the windows/application data/mozilla/firefox folder, because I did remove FF 2 after I found ver 3 working well, and these things are still there. It's a file called history.dat, and it is in the folder that you mentioned. Delete that file if necessary. Thanks One more thing. A lot of people didn't like how Firefox 3 changed the way that the history drop-down list is displayed from the address bar (I know that I didn't like the change). There's an add-on that makes Firefox 3 look like the old firefox 2 in that regard. It's called "Oldbar", and can be found he https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6227/ |
