can't uninstall
I have win 98se with IE6 and recently installed "bluetooth" software which
is not working properly, and now want to uninstall to use the replaced version, but when I try to uninstall the original from add/remove, I get a message "do you want to remove all files from this program" I click "yes" then the maintenance wizard comes up saying "maintenance is complete. reboot you computer" showing "finish" which reboots the comp. After that, it is still showing in add/remove but I don't see it in c/programs.(I have done this about 5 times. the result is the same) Can I assume that it is really gone? I would be grateful of any suggestions, thanks Tassie |

The software is gone (or mostly gone.) The remaining entry in Add/Remove
Programs is a Registry issue. Unless you're familiar with the Registry and comfortable editing it (not something for the faint-hearted), I'd leave it alone. If you want the instructions for getting rid of the entry, post back. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Tassie" wrote in message ... Is the remaining entry in add/remove going to interfere with the installation of the new bluetooth software though? Tassie "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: The software is gone (or mostly gone.) It shouldn't interfere, but you'll end up with two entries, and if they're
worded the same, you won't be able to tell which is which without actually trying them. The obsolete one will throw an error if you try to use it to uninstall. But as I say, I can give you detailed instructions, including how to backup and restore the Registry if things go wrong. The main problem with editing the Registry is that there's no undo. Delete or change something and it's gone, just like that. Only way to undo is to restore a backup. Still, to be honest, it's not a difficult thing to do if you take the proper precautions. I just had a sense that you might already be timid regarding such things. Hmmm.... It's 3AM and I'm insomniac, so I think I'll give you the instructions now and you can use them if you wish. I suggest you print these instructions, since if anything goes horribly wrong you'll have to boot to DOS mode and use SCANREG to restore a backup. These instructions are pretty much standard procedure for editing the Registry. If you have already installed the new Bluetooth software, then first check to see if there really are two entries in Add/Remove Programs. If there's only one, then you don't have to worry about editing the Registry. The new entry will have replaced the old one. 1. First, back up the Registry. Go to Start, then Run. Type in "scanregw /backup" (without the quotes) and click OK. Now, make sure you actually have a new backup. They're in a hidden folder called C:\Windows\SYSBCKUP. If you can't find that folder in Windows Explorer, then do the following: Go to the View menu in Explorer, then Folder Options, then View tab. Find and check "Show all files", then click OK. Now, in the SYSBCUP folder, look for files named RBxxx.CAB, where xxx is a three-digit number. Ignore the numbers, just look at the date/time stamps (use View menu and select Details to make this easy.) The date/time of one of those files should be the same as when you ran the backup command. Assuming there is a new backup, close Windows Explorer and go to the next step. I'm 99.99% certain that your backup will be there, but it's always wise to make sure. 3. Now for the Registry. Again in StartRun box, type in REGEDIT, then click OK. When the Registry editor opens, it sort of looks like Windows Explorer, but it's a bit different. Using the + signs at left, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then Software, then Microsoft, then Windows, then CurrentVersion, then click right on the key named Uninstall. At the bottom of the window, it should read: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Win dows \CurrentVersion\Uninstall 4. Expand Uninstall key, then look at the keys just below it. (Keys look like folders.) See if the one of the key names hints that it's for your Bluetooth entry. Click on the key and then look in the right-hand pane at the value called "DisplayName" (not QuietDisplayName). The "data" for that value should read the same as the Add/Remove Programs entry. If the Bluetooth item is not readily apparent, you'll have to look at each Key below Uninstall until you find the one with the correct DisplayName entry. Again, the DisplayName should read *exactly* the same as the Add/Remove Programs entry. If there is more than one such key, then post back with the key names for advice. 5. Now back up the specific key that you're going to delete (the Bluetooth key.) You do this by highlighting the key and then using File menuExport Registry File. Save the Export to your Desktop. Name it "Bluetooth.reg". 6. Now right-click the Bluetooth key and Delete. Then close the Registry Editor. 7. Check Add/Remove Programs to see if the entry is gone. If it isn't, go to your Desktop and right-click the Bluetooth.reg file, then choose Merge. That will put what you deleted back into the Registry. Then you'll have to try again to find the proper key to delete. Restart your system to make sure it's still functioning properly. If you have any new problems, or if you think you accidentally edited or deleted something you shouldn't have in Regedit, here's how you restore a backup. 1. Reboot the system and then repeatedly tap the F8 (or Ctrl) key until a Startup Menu appears. Choose Command Prompt Only. 2. Type in "scanreg /restore" (without the quotes), then press ENTER. 3. Choose the backup to restore by Date/Time, not by file name. 4. Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart the system. If you restore a Registry backup, any program(s) you've installed or any settings you've changed since the backup was made will have to be reinstalled or set again. And that's how it's done. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Tassie" wrote in message ... Thanks! You are right, I am a bit timid about handling
the registry. Just the same I will keep the instructions, and some one else might help me with them if there is still trouble. I'll do the back-up any way (You do keep late/early hours. I hope you get a good sleep.) Tassie "Gary S.
