HDD install not detected
Yup, set to default. i even tried setting it to CDROM as the first in line,
but to no avail. "Ben Myers" wrote: Go into the BIOS setup and make sure the boot sequence is set properly. I don't know if the CD that came with the disk is bootable. This is a brand new blank drive, and there is not other drive in the PC. The one I had was bad, and this is a replacement. It won't even boot with the Startup disk so I can get CDROM support. ??? I am trying to install a new replacement HDD in my boy's PC (PIII 333MHz, Win98--yeah, it's old). I have a Seagate 80GB replacement HDD. After a couple of tries and some cable swaps, I got the machine to boot back up from the motherboard, but it will not detect the new HDD. It won't even boot from my Windows staretup disk. I have all the BIOS settings as per the instructions with the drive. BUT, when I try to get the PC to auto-detect the HDD, it stalls at "Auto-detecting new primary master" and that's it. I can't even back out of it; it completely freezes and I have to power the PC off. Any ideas? Thanks. :-| |

HDD install not detected
Not necessarily the easiest way, but the simplest is to put the drives into
a known-good machine and check 'em out. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Chuck" wrote in message ... Could be. No idea how to check. My PC won't complete a boot with the old HDD. Powers up OK tho'. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: So maybe it wasn't the HDD that went bad, but rather the controller? Or perhaps the power isn't good and that caused the old drive to go bad and prevents the new one from behaving? Just thinking out loud... -- Gary S. HDD install not detected
Without any HDD attached at all, will it boot to a floppy startup disk? BIOS
upgrades are usually performed using a floppy disk boot. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Chuck" wrote in message ... I think it's an ASUS board. But even if one exists, how do I install it w/o the ability to boot up? It won't even boot from my Windows staretup disk. Older Award BIOSes have a disk size limit. It used to be 34GB and then 65GB. If such a BIOS tries to detect a larger disk it aborts with a division overflow. Can you check if there is a BIOS update available ? Check the mainboard manufacturer's site. -- Steven |

Nope. All I get is the initial memory test (HIMEM, etc) and that's it. The
floppy drive buzzes and whatnot, but I get nothing. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: Without any HDD attached at all, will it boot to a floppy startup disk? Open the case and remove and reseat the memory modules. If this doesn't
help, try creating a new boot floppy. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm Ben "Chuck" wrote in message ... If you start the PC with no HDD can you press DEL and get the BIOS setup menu ? In the BIOS options you can tell it to ignore an HDD by setting the drive type to 'none'. This should be the same as physically removing the new HDD. Will Win98 start now ? To update the BIOS you will need to make a DOS boot floppy and then get the BIOS file and a flash program from the ASUS site. The site also has instructions. Hopefully the BIOS date will be after Sept 2000 and/or the notes will mention 'overcomes 75GB limit'. What is the actual product ID of your motherboard ? -- Steven |

If you can't even boot to the floppy disk when no HDD is present... Sounds
like it accesses the floppy but can't actually read it, or it can read it but can't process the info sufficiently to prompt a boot... I dunno, sounds to me like your motherboard is the problem. I forget, have you tried these HDDs in a different system? And, are you certain the floppy disk you used will boot a healthy machine? I know it sounds like a drudge, but being very methodical and complete is the only way to track down the culprit for sure. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Chuck" wrote in message ... Nope.
