Default can't open .txt file from Windows Explorer

c:\programs\accessories\wordpad.exe.

I think Gary may have hit it on the head, I am copying, basically, a table
of odds on race horses and pasting in wordpad in text format. With firefox it
keeps proper spaces between the numbers, while IE does not.

Thanks for your help.

When I click on any .txt file in Explorer I get error message:

C:\My
Cannot find this file
Please verify that the correct path and filename are given

The C:\My is supposed to be C:\My Documents\File folder\file.txt.
If this is the problem how can I change the C:\My to C:\My Documents?
In Explorer when I right click on the filename and choose Properties
the
dialog box shows the proper Location: C:\My Documents\File folder\File
so
apparently the proper information is in the file details.

The files being opened are .txt files being opened with WordPad.

I am going to Brisbet.com, I have an account there. On second page choose a
track. On next page choose pools. It give you a table of odds for the
horses in the race. If I right click and "select all" then copy, then paste
in Wordpad document using "text document" everything is pretty well lined up,
I may have to insert a few tabs. But, it will not show up in the Wordpad
document if I use IE. So I use Firefox and It will. But, my problem then is
when I later go into Explorer and click on the name of the file I chose to
save under it won't open. But, it will open if I open Wordpad first and then
open the file I want.

WordPad is installed. I can first open WordPad and then identify the file

I
want to open and it will open OK. It's only when I click on the file in
Explorer that I have the problem.

Does that apply to *all* TXT files you try to open by double-clicking? Also,
you didn't tell me the full path to your WordPad.exe, to verify what command
should be used in the FileType.

The files I have the problem with are information I have copied from the
internet that has a little bit of formatting, tabs, spacing, etc., that I
want to retain. I have been doing this so long I don't remember if I ever
tried notpad.

The only other thing I know is that if I copy the same information using
Windows Internet Explorer it will not retain the formating, that is why I

use
the copy command in Firefox. Maybe this is the problem, however this

works
OK in windows XP but not the the machine I am currently using which is

98SE.
Again, thanks.

If they include formatting, then they shouldn't be saved as TXT files. they
should probably be saved as RTF or DOC. Tell you the truth, I'm a bit lost
regarding what you're trying to do. Do you have an example web page I could
look at? And can you tell me precisely what steps you use, both in IE and in
FF? When I, for example, highlight stuff in IE and then Ctr-C to copy and
Ctrl-V to paste into a new WordPad document, all formatting, links, etc.,
are fairly well maintained, with teh exception of image placeholders and
tables getting out of whack.

Note that normally, TXT files open with Notepad unless they are over

IOW,
it's much safer to use Notepad for most TXT or other plain text files.

Default can't open .txt file from Windows Explorer

Hey, all I can say is that my Win98 WordPad does the same thing when copying
from IE to WordPad. My *guess* is that when you copy from IE to the
Clipboard (which is where Copied stuff gets temporarily stored) it copies
not just the rendered items (text, images, other objects) but rather also
copies the underlying code. When you Paste that stuff into Notepad, the OLE
procedures rightly only paste rendered text, though just how that works I
can't say. Not my department. But if you paste it into MSWord, it will take
some time and eventually render it as seen on the website. If I save that,
and then copy from that Word doc into WordPad, it works.

Fact is, I can't copy the text from this message I'm writing in OE into
WordPad, not even after toggling the RichText/PlainText keys. Because it's
simply not just the text that gets copied. Verdict: Unless it's due to
having installed Word and/or other Office apps, I would have to conclude
that this is just the way WordPad in Windows 98 is. The solution is to stop
using word for this purpose and use something else. Meta-Pad or whatever (to
get around the limitations of Notepad.)

But you lost me on the rest. Once you have the rendered plain text pasted
into WordPad, however you manage it, you then do what? Save it as Plain text
(TXT) file? In WordPad's Save or SaveAs dialogue, do you choose Plain text
from the drop-down menu, or just name it brisbet.txt, or what? Also, TXT
files are not normally associated with WordPad, but that seems to be what
you expect. So we're back to the FileType issue -- what, exactly, do you
have in your FileType listing for TXT files?

I start off opening word pad, click on the open new document, in the dialogue
box select text document, OK, then just paste what is in clipboard. I then
have most of the formatting unless the horses name is very short in which
case I have to insert some tabs to get that line to line up in columns with

But, we are getting off the subject, I think. I want to click on the

get a dialog box thas says:

Shouldn't the line

Very simply, the FileType entry is incorrect. That is why we've been asking
you to report *exactly* what is entered into the properties of the filetype
for the extension you're working with. Assuming that it's the TXT extension,
look in FileTypes tab of Folder Options for "Tex Document". Click on Edit,
then click on Open (assuming Open is bolded, which I assume it is.) Click on
Edit again and tell us what is listed there.

Do you see the extensions of files like TXT and EXE, etc., when browsing
files in Windows Explorer?

Going back to my post of 11 Oct, you are getting the C:\My error message
because the "%1" is missing from this line:
C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

I am not sure why you are getting the error message you reported back
then--maybe it was because you tried to alter the line instead of totally
replacing it. Use copy and paste to replace the line you have with this
line:

C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

Default can't open .txt file from Windows Explorer

OK. I went to Explorer, click on Tools, click on Folder Options, click on
File Types, click on Text Document, it says Extension: TXT RTX DIC EXC then
Content Type (MIME) text/plain, Then Opens with WORDPAD.
Then when I click on EDIT and then OPEN and then EDIT I get
c:\program files\accessories\wordpad.exe

Yes I do see extensions of files like TXT and EXE when browsing files in
Explorer.

Thanks.

OK it works now. When I tried it before I must have been in a different
place and it would not take the "%1". Thanks for staying with me and helping

I am not sure why you are getting the error message you reported back

replacing it. Use copy and paste to replace the line you have with this
line:

C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1"

Default can't open .txt file from Windows Explorer

Just so you understand, when the command line is not in DOS 8.3 format then
it is often necessary to enclose the command in double-quotes, particularly
if any names in the path include spaces (like "Program Files".) All files
and folders in Windows 9x have DOS 8.3-compliant names even if you don't see
them DOS 8.3 simply means that the name is no longer than 8 characters and
the extension no longer than three characters.) So, you can either do what
Ron suggested and only use the DOS 8.3 names, or you can enclose the command
in double-quotes -- but do not include the switches within the quotes. Thus,
either one of the following commands, exactly as I've written them, would
work.

"c:\program files\accessories\wordpad.exe" %1
or
c:\progra~1\access~1\wordpad.exe %1

copied
from
the
internet that has a little bit of formatting, tabs, spacing,

etc.,
that I
want to retain. I have been doing this so long I don't

remember if
I
ever
tried notpad.

The only other thing I know is that if I copy the same

information
using
Windows Internet Explorer it will not retain the formating,

that
is
why I
use
the copy command in Firefox. Maybe this is the problem,

however
this
works
OK in windows XP but not the the machine I am currently using

which is
98SE.
Again, thanks.

If they include formatting, then they shouldn't be saved as TXT

files.
they
should probably be saved as RTF or DOC. Tell you the truth, I'm

a
bit
lost
regarding what you're trying to do. Do you have an example web

page
I
could
look at? And can you tell me precisely what steps you use, both

in
IE
and in
FF? When I, for example, highlight stuff in IE and then Ctr-C to

copy
and
Ctrl-V to paste into a new WordPad document, all formatting,

links,
etc.,
are fairly well maintained, with teh exception of image

placeholders
and
tables getting out of whack.

Possibly, you haven't got WordPad installed. It's an

Use find to look for WordPad.exe. Does it exist on your

machine?
If
so,
what's the pull path to it?

Note that normally, TXT files open with Notepad unless they

are
over
64KB,
in which case you are prompted to use WordPad. Do you really

want
your
TXT
files associated with WordPad, or do you want things to be

the
way
they're
"supposed" to be? Note that editing certain types of plain

text
files in
WordPad instead of Notepad, specifically system

configuration
files,
scripts, etc., can cause them to not work anymore, since

WordPad
will
insert
formatting characters that mess things up if it's not set

correctly.
IOW,
it's much safer to use Notepad for most TXT or other plain

text
files.
