Windows Me Install Problem
I am trying to hook up a new Palm Pilot to my PC. When I try to Hotsync the
PDA, the system recognizes the new hardware and freezes during the install. A tech friend told me to install a PCI to USB card. Her idea being that the motherboard was being drained of power (older computer) and the new card would take care of that. I installed the card and the computer still freezes during the install. Could it be a problem with the installer part of the OS? The drivers wouldn't even install. Any Ideas? Thanks, Mark |

Mark,
Just a wild guess .... Check your windows\inf folder (a hidden system folder and you will have to enable the viewing of such files and folders in Explorer (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files") and look for large numbers of oem*.inf files that are all 0 bytes in size. If you've got thousands of such files this is the cause of your problem. Delete ONLY the 0 byte oem*.inf files. Why has this happened? One possibility it that you have Norton's System Doctor installed and forgot to disable System Doctor before updating your system from the Windows Update site. If you don't delete these files some software and most hardware and driver installs will take a very long time to complete if they complete at all. For more details see the Symantec site: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...15010309&src=n and also MS KB 281967 - "Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or Adding New Hardware" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281967). I would strongly recommend that you contact Microsoft and mention KB281967 and also KB301540 and ask for a copy of the new ifsmgr.vxd v4.90.3003. You will then either be sent the file or told how and where to download a copy. There should be no charge for this call other than for the cost of the phone call. Alternatively do yourself and your PC a big favour and dump System Doctor since it causes far more problems than any non-existent benefit that Symantec might claim it offers. -- Mike Maltby RedMark wrote: I am trying to hook up a new Palm Pilot to my PC. Footnote:
Mark has since written to me and told me that he found some 48,000 odd oem*.inf files in the windows\inf folder. Removing these resolved his installation problem. -- Mike Maltby Mike M wrote: Just a wild guess .... Check your windows\inf folder ... snip |

As ever Mike, your 'wild guess' diagnosis was spot-on from Mark's
description of the symptoms - and thanks for reporting the completion with your footnote. Another satisfied customer g Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... Hi Mart,
I thought it worth finishing off the thread by reporting a satisfied user rather than leaving the thread hanging. Hope all goes well. Have got my new PC up and running but haven't as yet done much with it as I still seem to be catching up on several weeks of missed sleep. :-) Cheers, -- Mike Mart wrote: As ever Mike, your 'wild guess' diagnosis was spot-on from Mark's description of the symptoms - and thanks for reporting the completion with your footnote. Mart,
I had to swap out the mobo. There was/is something wrong in the northbridge area of the original mobo with it running very hot, bios not seeing all connected devices, memory access very slow and all manner of other peculiarities. Am now trying to get it replaced or a refund based on it not being fit when purchased. Still have some small issues but those are down to me trying to push things towards the limit. The box is intended to run the system(s) from a RAID0 array of 2x80GB disks and data storage on a RAID5 array of 4x200GB disks. The RAID5 is working fine but am having problems at the moment in getting the OS to install on the RAID0 so am also running a PATA 80GB drive as a system drive for testing until I can get the RAID0 all sorted out. Mainly playing with 64bit (XP and Vista). There aren't as yet any Vista drivers, 32 or 64 bit, for the nForce4 chipset which means I can't use the RAID0 even as a data drive. Drivers exist for XP 64 but am currently also running XP from the PATA drive. Tomorrow I hope to get an XP 64 system running on the RAID0. I can't wait to do some real video work on the new box which has a dual core AMD 4400+ and 2GB of dual channel DDR memory. -- Mike Mart wrote: "Mike M" wrote ....
