microsoft windows media player 6.4
Ok i wrote earlier and i guess didnt explain enough. My
windows media player is not working properly. When i go to webbsites that play music videos and such that use the windows media player says i need to install it but it is already on my computer,I have been able to access these things with media player in the past but now it isnt working properly and when i try to upgrade it does not do any good it still does not play the video. In control panel under add/remove programs there is windows media player so it gives me the option to remove it ,however when i click to remove it,it says that it is required by other system components and should not be removed at this time.I was just wondering if it was safe to remove it or if it would mess up other things if i did.Someone suggested repairing it ...how do you just repair it.It also runs the music launch on yahoo and that comes up with errors when i try to listen to it because of media player so any help would be appreciated.i hope thats enough info.Thanx |

Do the files you try to play require WMP 9? Does the message "you need =
to install" mentionWMP9"? You might want to be careful with WMP9 as it = has caused issues on older machines. IIRC WMP9 was released with XP in = mind. You can safely remove WMP from control Panel Add/Remove Programs. = Before doing so be sure that you have the install file to reinstall it = or another type of player to install that uses the file types that will = now be unassociated once you uninstall WMP. The reason you get the = message "required by other system components" is most likely due to it = being the last player installed and it took over all associations to = media files. WMP is one of many apps that go by their own rule of when = installed, take over. In other words, the last app installed for file = types takes over for those file types. After a short peek at MS I see they have a WMP9 for 98SE, ME and 2K. = Might still want to take caution if you choose to install it.=20 Starting here and only peruseing thru half I see they have at least = back to WMP 6.4 for download. I didn't click on it to check but it is = listed. http://tinyurl.com/b45k After reinstalling you may want to get to MS Update and see if any = updates/patches are offered. --=20 Brian A. Maybe the 6.4 doesn't have the repair option then.
I know it is an option with the later ones when you choose uninstall. You might be getting those errors as mentioned by Brian A. because it is = not supported and they are looking for newer version. Or you might need = updates for your version or some other missing codec's. MP and a codec = pack is included with Internet Explorer and a codec pack is available at = Windows Update. Try the update site first.=20 =20 If you are all updated, do you get any errors playing at any other time = or just the web sites? If so you could uninstall but first go to control = panel-windows setup and under multimedia verify there is a check mark = for media player. That is the original one that comes with Windows. I = would think the warning is immaterial since you plan on reinstalling. = Either download a new copy or try a repair of IE, assuming you chose = media player option when you set-up IE. After that if you still get problems at the websites try 7.1. If still video problem get 9 (if you have 98se) I have found most sites support 7.1 but on some, I am informed I must = have 9. I like 9 better than 7.1 but it won't install on 98. On either one it won't play anything until you go to the options and put = a checkmark for the types to play. Just warning you if you get silence = when you first want to play something.
