Default Start-Up / DOS Shell display too wide

Recently, for some unknown reason, when the computer
starts us, or I try to open a DOS shell full screen, the
display is too wide. When I try to adjust the display
width on the monitor controls, it sort of works, but the
left and right edges are too small and blurry.

Any ideas what went wrong? I didn't install any new
programs or hardware recently.
