Default Can't Install CD-R Drive

I'm trying to swap out the CD reader with a CD-R. When I plug the CD-R in
when I reboot it is asking me to insert a system disk. It's sort of acting
like there's no OS. When I plug the old CD reader back in everything works
fine. I notice the ribbon goes from the motherboard to the hard drive to the
CD reader. I'd ideally like to keep the reader and add the CD-R as well but
I'm not sure how to proceed.

Check that the jumpers on your new CD-RW are set to the same ID, master or
slave, as the device it is replacing. If not then your new CD-RW and your
hard disk will be confusing the system which would be unable to tell them
apart. Look on the CD-RW (and CD ROM) for a label explaining the
different DIP jumper settings required which on many devices means moving
a jumper from one pair of pins to another.

At first I tried removing the CD-R and replaced it with the new CD-RW. When
I rebooted it gave me the "insert system disk" message and hung there. I
tried all three setting Master, Slave and Duel. I thought it was a bad drive
so I swapped it out with another computer (an XP machine) but it worked fine
there.

Not only do you need to ensure that the new drive is jumpered to match the
one that was removed but also check that you didn't dislodge the cable
connection to the hard drive. Is the hard drive still being recognised in
the bios?
