Few if any Symantec products are compatible with Win Me and certainly not
NIS2005. As long as you have NIS2005 installed you can expect to see problems such as you report plus others. Incidentally can you explain exactly what you mean by PCHealth not running? If you mean the PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection which depends on the Task Scheduler then that is no loss since the data collected is of little or no use and not used by Win Me. This won't interfere with the operation of either System Restore or System File Protection although NIS2005 and LiveUpdate may possibly destroy both at some time in the future. PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection: The PCHealth entry in MSConfig | Startup and also in the Task Scheduler, refers to the PCHealth Scheduler for Data Collection routine (pchschd.exe) which launches winmgmt.exe to collect software and hardware configuration data that can be accessed using Help & Support's System Information's History view. In other words it allows you to see changes over a period of time to your system such as drivers. The details collected are contained in the files CollectedData???.xml files in the folder ...\windows\pchealth\helpctr\DataColl. Note that all that pchschd.exe is doing every ten minutes is checking if the system is idle or not. If idle it launches winmgmt.exe to collect the information and sets itself to run again in 6 hours, if not it continues to run at ten minute intervals until it finds the system is idle. As to whether you need this historic data or not, only you can decide. A number of us have long since decided to disable pchschd.exe having no use for the collected data. It should be noted that if you contact MS or an OEM for help that it is possible that they might request you send them these files. If you do choose to disable pchschd.exe it is ESSENTIAL to delete/disable it from both MSConfig | Startup and the Task Scheduler as otherwise the startup entry will recreate the Task Scheduler entry when the system is rebooted. One advantage of disabling the PCHealth Scheduler is that it minimizes the chances of winmgmt.exe causing problems. What happens is that quite often winmgmt.exe doesn't exit correctly when it has finished but instead remains resident and using cpu cycles. Note also that disabling these entries does NOT affect either System Restore or System File Protect, nor AutoUpdate or your ability to use Help & Support, all part of what Microsoft call "PCHealth". -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP bonifacia wrote: message pops up before i can log on: task scheduler service not running , run task my defrag goes to 0 /scan disk stops does not complete / pchealth also not running . until I click Run.I recently upgraded my NAV2001 to NIS2005 Upgrade. prior to this I had no problems with task scheduler. |

Yes it is PCHealth Scheduler for Data Col... In task scheduler next to
PCHealth the word missing ) appears. Then I click Run, which then changes time when it should run again automatically. Q. will that resolve the degra and Scan problem. Also do you mean Runmsconfigstartup and ........what delete or clear? If NIS2005is not compatible with Winme then what is, how can i protect my pc? By the way Thanks Mike Really. I typed this twice ,my reply was not working..now it is. "Mike M" wrote: Few if any Symantec products are compatible with Win Me and certainly not NIS2005. Did you read my post about the PCHealth Scheduler. This is a totally
unnecessary entry and is not required for the proper and efficient use of Win Me. Personally I would remove it from both the Task Scheduler and also uncheck the entry in MSConfig | Startup. If NIS2005is not compatible with Winme then what is Anything that does not include the word Symantec in its name. There are many alternatives none as bad or as damaging as NIS which given a chance will destroy your PC and make it unusable. An extreme comment but unfortunately not an exaggeration as may be quickly ascertained by reading these Win Me newsgroups. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP bonifacia wrote: Yes it is PCHealth Scheduler for Data Col... Examine your msconfig / Startup tab to see if the red-marked referenced
programs have been disabled there. If so, you will have to decide if you wish to reenable them. I recommend doing so ONLY if you really need the function. -- Jack E. Use system restore to roll your back to a checkpoint created when all was
working or, far better, before you installed NIS2005. Forget about the red circles, since you have already said, the task scheduler isn't working so it is, IMO, pointless looking at the schedules in the task folder. It should be fairly obvious, or it is to me, that none of your scheduled tasks are likely to be working until you get the Task Scheduler back up and working. See MS KB 215937 - "Task Scheduler Service Does Not Start" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=215937) for one possibility as to why the Task Scheduler service is not running. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP bonifacia wrote: continued Task Scheduler Service not running message greets me , again MaintenanceScan disk, Symantec NetDetect continue to have the word "missed" under status. not running on scheduled time. Please compare the list of items in ...Windows\Tasks with those in
msconfig/Startup. Note which of the red-marked ones are also not enabled to launch at boot in msconfig/Startup. -- Jack E.
