You've struck paydirt. Older processors are not compatible
with that fix. Only Athlon 700mhz up and newer Intel
processors are compatible. Its not the OS, Its the chip.

Where did you come by this information, please?

It looks like I'll have to have my son disable KB891711, since he's =

got a 400MHz
AMD in his system and *is* having problems. The two machines here =

have 1700 and
1900 AMDs and are having no problems.

No, Kevin, I haven't. Didn't occur to me actually. If you think this
information might be helpful, I will. Thanx,

By "Scandefrag" do you mean the disk defragmenter from the Tools tab
off the Properties of a drive?

No, Bill, I am referring to the ScanDefrag program

Yes, I saw the later messages and figured that out. Sorry to have wasted

your
time on that.

But...

written and maintained by three or four faithful programmers here who

realized
that some (most?) of us had difficulty when a certain failure caused an

automatic
scandisk to start with power-on. Scandisk could be run in Safe Mode all

right,
but it was a nuisance, and ScanDefrag solved the problem without

requiring
Safe
Mode. I believe you can read about and download ScanDefrag he

... is quite interesting. Thanks for the pointer.

You're welcome, Bill. You certainly didn't waste my time and I'm always
pleased to point someone to ScanDefrag.

Kevin,

The problem must be the patch.

I also couldn't run ScanDefrag with KB891711 enabled.

Disabled it and no more problems.

What is the division point on the chips? I have two HP Pavilion 6745C

Ken, have you checked the ScanDefrag logs to see what has
changed and/or notified the programs authors ??

I have followed your suggestion and will advise here if I hear anything from
the ScanDefrag group.

Mike M had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

At this time, it appears the issue is common to systems running AMD
processors.

Thanks, that's something I didn't know. My Win Me boxes are an old
Intel PII 450 and a Celeron 400 plus various VMs on PCs running XP. My two
AMD boxes are only used to run XP Pro and XP Pro 64.

Running on an old AMD K6-II -- 500 MHz (My ME test box). Running okay. Just
a silly question (I'm trying to figure out if there's any basis for the
claims that it's only effecting people on dialup which doesn't seem logical
to me but I've never been the most logical person.) Are you using broadband
or dialup? Personally installed the update twice (one on 98se and one on ME)
to test and haven't a problem here. The 98se is PIII 1 GHz and ME is
mentioned above. Not a glitch or slowdown. Both are "lite" systems in that
they've only a firewall and KAV installed besides the OS itself. Just plain
old test boxes just for this.

Another data point, eh?

OK, to update the list I sent on the other message thread, here's my machines
1. AMD Athelon XP 1900+, broadband .. No problems (yet)
2. AMD Athelon XP 1700+, broadband .. No problems (yet)
3. AMD 400MHz, dialup .. Occasional "surprise" resets since applying KB891711

Now this may be a false hope but I just ran Microsofts "Regclean" and haven't
had a freeze-up for several hours. Maybe that update enters something in the
registry which doesn't get removed when uninstalling it via add/remove.
Perhaps others who are more knowledgeable may know?
That sort of figures somehow. If the registry is re-routing things through a
program that doen't exist it would freeze the pc?
Knowing my luck it will be back tomorrow!!!!

Curiouser and curiouser... See also this:

I have to go down into the village to pick up a package from UPS in about
ten minutes - I have to sign for it though it shouldn't really matter but I
guess in a way I'm glad that I do. While I'm down there I'm going to bring a
box down there and set it up. My parent's have DSL (I can't get DSL here)
and I'll see if there's a difference. I will bring a laptop down and check
it though I'd feel better with a ghosted system that I could just leave
there running for a day or two. Will let you know if there's a problem with
it down there.
