Default Pure Dos & Computer Hang

Hello to all,
I set up another Dos shortcut but this time configured Dos to
to run in what I believe to be pure-dos-mode.
(I did this via right-click on icon, properties, advanced, then ticked
MS-DOS mode).
I tried it today but all it did was take away icons and leave me with
just my wallpaper.
I then did a ctr-alt-del and the only thing showing was 'Winoldapp'.
I havent heard of this one before but I ended the task to see if I
could venture further and perhaps get to Dos.
Long story short, I ended up having to warm-boot as it just hung at
my wallpaper.
Any hints or clues as to what just happened anyone?

regards Jane

What should have happened was the machine should have rebooted into dos mode
like when you choose shutdown and restart in dos.
I apears somethign hung while the system was closing out. Maybe a corupt
sound file on exit or another program was hanging. try to restart in dos
mode and see if it does the same directly from the start/shutdown menu.

Hello jazz,
seeing as how you are online right now I will try and get this problem
sorted.
It does the same thing when I choose to re-start in Dos on close, do
you have any idea why?
Why did you go straight to 'sound-card', is there a relationship
somewhere between the two?
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello again Jazz,
I have just realised that this whole thing has been this way for
a while now and I keep forgetting to post the problem as I dont
shut down very often.
My computer does actually 'hang' for between 10 & 15 secs on
shut-down or reboot, just sits there with the wall-paper staring at me.
This would seem to suggest there is a correlation going on here, hope
you have a good suggestion or solution.

Thank you for reply Jazz.

regards Jane

This doesn't actually answer your question(s) jane but did you know that you
need to have DOS drivers installed in order to use sound in old DOS games at
least in the case of my Sound Blaster Audigy? I hope that someday you are
able to have Direct X 9.0c for 98SE for games. I am actually thinking of
installing future games via XP and that is because Creative has given up
making new sound drivers for 98SE and ATI may stop creating future video
drivers for 98SE/ME as well. As you probably know jane that games are very
demanding and usually the newer ones require the latest video and sound
drivers and if the companies stop developing them for 98SE then you may have
to run them under XP in the future at least to be able to get the best
experience it will have to run under XP. Also, since 98SE uses up to 512
mb's of memory well but beyond that you have to change settings in order for
there not to be problems. Since some newer games are already requiring 512
mb's of ram then it will be only a matter of time before they need more ram
and thus will only work well under XP. (PS. I know PCR will probably have
some comment about this and I may have made a mistake or two that I await
correction from more skilled individual(s) than myself.)

Click StartRun, type MSCONFIG and click OK.
On the General tab, click the Advanced button.
Click to put a check mark in the box for "Disable fast shutdown", and click OK.
Click OK to close Msconfig, and restart the computer.

If that does not help, or if the box was already checked or wasn't there, go he

No comment. ESSAUDIO has put lines into my Config.sys & Autoexec.bat,
but I never do use nor have I ever heard sound in DOS.

Hello Glee,
I have just checked and the box doesnt have a tick in it.
Before I actually put the tick in it and re-boot, could you tell me
exactly what it is that I am doing and why it will solve the problem?
I want to learn about all things that I adjust rather than just doing the
adjusting.
Also, in my first post I mentioned that on doing a ctr-alt-del I found
"Winoldapp" sitting there and no-one has yet commented on what
it is and why it was there during my problem?
Lastly, will putting the tick in the box solve my problem of having
access via a shortcut to DosMode?

Thank you

regards Jane

Winoldapp is a shell Windows uses to run 16-bit MS DOS programs within
Windows. Suggests that your PIF file configuration isn't right.
Winoldapp was expecting a program to run, which isn't what you are
doing. This app is meant to support older programs that need it.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=104394

I wonder if you have accidentally disabled Windows from rebooting into
MS-DOS mode as described in the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;243736

If so, the problem is a Policy:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Win
OldApp

Note that *if* the Registry key that's described here exists, you can
either change the "NoRealMode" value to "0", or you can delete the
WINOLDAPP key altogether.
