IE 6 proxy server problem
After I connect to the Internet using AT&T Worldnet (dialup), I find that I
cannot access any Web sites. I went to: Tools -Internet Options-Connections-Settings to find that the "Proxy" box is checked when it shouldn't be. (AT&T does not use proxy servers). I have to manually uncheck the box in order to get the browser to work. I used the IE 6 Repair Tool but it did not fix the problem. Please advise. Thank you very much! |

What happens when you uncheck the box? Is it checked again after you have
rebooted? If it is getting rechecked what is the address of the proxy server? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP fmcchris909 wrote: After I connect to the Internet using AT&T Worldnet (dialup), I find that I cannot access any Web sites. Hi Mike,
Thank you for your response. When I uncheck the box I am able to access Web sites. However, when I disconnect from AT&T and then reconnect later, I then have to once again uncheck the "proxy" box. The check appears every time I connect to the Internet. I don't know the address of the proxy server and wouldn't know how to find that information. AT&T WorldNet Service is the default setting and nothing else is listed in the "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network Settings" window. Frank "Mike M" wrote: What happens when you uncheck the box? Frank,
The address of the proxy server is in the box alongside the check box "Use Proxy server". It appears that it may well be empty. I was worried that it might have had the address of a possibly malicious site and possibly be an indication that you have malware of some sort on your PC.. Is the box "Automatically detect settings" on the same page checked? If yes, uncheck it, if not, check it. Now uncheck the use Proxy server box" and reboot. Did the Proxy server setting stick? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP fmcchris909 wrote: Hi Mike, Thank you for your response. When I uncheck the box I am able to access Web sites. Hi Mike,
The box alongside the checkbox "Use Proxy server" is empty. The box "Automatically detect settings" was unchecked. I checked it as you instructed and unchecked the "use Proxy server" box and then dialed an Internet connection. The settings did not stick--the "Automatically detect settings" box is once again unchecked and the "use Proxy server" box is checked. Frank,
Try making a new DUN connectoid for your connection (Start - Settings - Dial-Up Networking - Make New Connection) as it is possible that the one you are using is damaged and that this is causing the settings not to stick. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP fmcchris909 wrote: The box alongside the checkbox "Use Proxy server" is empty.
