I can't get my nic to install properly... It seems to
install... i can ping it at 127.0.0.1 from the command
prompt... when i run ipconfig the nic ip defaults to some
unknown address... the netmask is stuck at 255.255.0.0...
it doesn't seem to be seeing ths dhcp or dns servers... i
have tried removing and reinstalling the hardware,

The NIC is defaulting to a Link Local IP address in the range
169.254.0.0/255.255.0.0 (described in RFC 3330). This is by design when it
can't find a DHCP server to assign an IP address. How are you configuring
the properties? It may be defective, of course; but that depends upon
whether you are installing standard drives which come with Windows, or the
drivers that come on the disc that came with the card.
