Default SU0013 Error with format and install of Windows 98 SE on PC

I have just about come to the end of my tether. The older PC decided not to
work and I thought well maybe it was timely to reformat and reinstall Win98.
It is always a big job but this time I have got to this error I havent had
before.
I have done alot of reading. I understand the difference between Upgrade and
New Installation. I have the CD that I got with the PC. An original MS WIN98
to use with no windows on machine.

I have a start up disk from previous formats and I get started but I can't
get past the partitioning thing. I have d/l instructions and have followed
them to the letter.
DISK MB FREE
USAGE
Disk 1 19093 19093
Disk 2 6150
100%
C: 6150

This is how it looks pretty much. I haven't been able to use disk 1 to
partition it, there is no space, no partition to delete, im really not sure
what to do.

I have burnt a cd from information online. To see if i can start with them
instead of my floppy.

But any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Meredith

Start the computer with the startup floppy, type "fdisk", press "Enter",
accept "Large disk support", then use option 1 to create a primary
DOS partition on disk 1. When this is done, boot with the floppy again,
insert your Windows 98 CD, type "setup" and press "Enter".

Correction.

Start the computer with the startup floppy, type "fdisk", press "Enter",
accept "Large disk support", then use option 1 to create a primary
DOS partition on disk 1. When this is done, boot with the floppy again,
type "fdisk /status:", press "Enter" and confirm that disk 1 is now assigned
drive letter "C:". If so, type "format c:", press "Enter" and format the
partition. Then insert your Windows 98 CD, type "setup" and press "Enter".

Default SU0013 Error with format and install of Windows 98 SE on PC

Dear Ben,

Thanks for responding. But your advice doesn't apply here as I cannot get
the Disk1 to do anything. When I get the fdisk to take me to create primary
DOS partition is is defaulting to Disk2. I choose option 5 to get it to work
on Disk1, but after many moments of activity but zero action % view. I get
the msg, no space to create partition, I exit and try to delete, can't
partition, can't delete, partition cant be defined.

It's the same story as before. I do know how to format or so I thought. I
have had conflicting advice about format c: or format c: /s... but in any
case it seems I have a Disk2 with 6000 odd MB and Disk1 with 19093 and
unavailable.

I downloaded a boot disk and other programs like Zap to try to clear hard
drives.
I burned them to CD as the new PC doesn't have a floppy drive. I have tried
to change BIOS settings so that the CDROM will read first.

The original problem came from the system not starting and the msg back then
was about the VMI verify and replace disk and enter. So I thought well can't
get away from a reformat and install on win98se.

The garbage tip is looking good. Ron suggested we take the hard drive from
it and try it with a PC that works. I have an old PC we don't use anymore and
well I have the HD out of it ready to have a go at connecting the HD from the
tricky one.

I have to know about jumper switches and I will need a Data Recovery program
to try to get back what we lost. Think that is a lost cause now cos I used
Zap63.com earlier today.

All help gratefull accepted. *S*

Thanks

Meredith

Sorry, I'm new here and I don't see all the posts. It's not a virus boot
protection that prevents everything? I would un hook and uninstall disk two
and see what Fdisk has to say about disk one then. Maxtor has some amazing
utilities that saved many a disk for me.
Good luck

Most hard drive manufacturers have diagnostic and installation software
available for download.
