Default Boot

I've suffered from a slow boot for some time now. It
takes about five minutes to boot. The delay is waiting
for the system tray to load. What loads is:
-Volume
-Callwave (internet answering machine)
-Spyware Guard
-AVG anti-virus
-Zone Alarm Free
-Lexmark printer

I've run Bla.exe a number of times asking what to do.
Sound drivers was the popular response. VIA is what I use.

I downloaded the latest versions from the VIA site I was
pointed to, removed current drivers in safe mode, pointed
the system to the new drivers upon reboot, but still no
joy.

A recent visit to the Windows Update Catalog revealed
newer drivers and new hope.

Drivers listed a

Could a newer driver set help speed up booting the
system? If you had to choose from the list I've included,
which would you choose.

WHERE (I.E. WHICH FOLDER) WOULD YOU SAVE THE DOWNLOAD TO?

Any ideas????????????????????????????

If I'm reading that right, looks like the normal M$ audio stuff is
taking a whale of a time to load... does your firewall report anything
trying to go outbound ? Getting any resource conflicts in DeviceManager ?

As far as which driverset to use... dunno, but they say that 4.3x is the
sweet spot for VIA 4-in-1s for Win9x, if that helps any.

Hmm... how does it run in SafeMode ? If OK, then I'd bet on "Callwave"
gumming things up.

"Callwave" is a good bet.

Thanks, Rick.

Nothing going outbound in firewall.
No conflicts in Device Manager.
Safe mode runs ok since the systray doesn't load.

What's perplexing about the bla log is that it loads all
the audio components then removes them and notes them
as "unknown". Why would it do that?

Also, I have a VIA folder that is completely empty. Could
the system be trying to load from there and not finding
them? Could the BIOS be set incorrectly? Registry
pointing to the wrong location?

Quote:
"As far as which driverset to use... dunno, but they say
that 4.3x is the sweet spot for VIA 4-in-1s for Win9x, if
that helps any."

How do I find if 4.3x is what I'm using? How would I
identify, from the list below, 4.3x should it not be what
I have? Where should I download 4.3x to (i.e. specific
folder on C: drive)?

Thanks again, Rick.

I'm off to the software forum to see why my new CD burner

I thought so too, Harry. But when I disabled it in
startup, via msconfig, things were still slow.
Something's just not right whether it be the registry,
BIOS or whatever.

What's perplexing about the bla log is that it loads all
the audio components then removes them and notes them
as "unknown". Why would it do that?

Also, I have a VIA folder that is completely empty. Could

Thanks for the feedback, Harry.

www.viaarena.com carries a load of drivers. Get the right ones for your
chipset (of course); the later ones are called something else (can't
remember right this minute) but the older ones are still called 4in1's.

IIRC it was taking something like 140 seconds to load the audio
components?... why not just use the M$ (default) ones and see what's up.

I'll give anything a try. I've tried viaarena.com without
success.

www.viaarena.com carries a load of drivers. Get the

right ones for your
chipset (of course); the later ones are called something

else (can't
remember right this minute) but the older ones are still

called 4in1's.

IIRC it was taking something like 140 seconds to load the

audio
components?... why not just use the M$ (default) ones and

Nothing going outbound in firewall.
No conflicts in Device Manager.
Safe mode runs ok since the systray doesn't load.

What's perplexing about the bla log is that it loads

all
the audio components then removes them and notes them
as "unknown". Why would it do that?

Also, I have a VIA folder that is completely empty.

Could
the system be trying to load from there and not finding
them? Could the BIOS be set incorrectly? Registry
pointing to the wrong location?

How do I find if 4.3x is what I'm using? How would I
identify, from the list below, 4.3x should it not be

what
I have? Where should I download 4.3x to (i.e. specific
folder on C: drive)?

Thanks again, Rick.

I'm off to the software forum to see why my new CD

(Sony) works but the software included (Nero express 6)

is
so amazingly slow. If you thought by boot log was

slow,
you should see this program run ;-).

If I'm reading that right, looks like the normal M$

audio

stuff is

taking a whale of a time to load... does your firewall

report anything

trying to go outbound ? Getting any resource conflicts

in DeviceManager ?

As far as which driverset to use... dunno, but they say

that 4.3x is the

Hmm... how does it run in SafeMode ? If OK, then I'd

bet

on "Callwave"

gumming things up.

In this case since you seemed to have the problem pinpointed to the
Systray contents, just disable them from loading (until you can pinpoint
it further)

in Start/Run/msconfig.exe (Startup Tab)

which would you choose.

Any ideas????????????????????????????

KB:

I didn't read every word of these posts, but it looks to me there might be a
conflict somewhere between your audio and video systems, since you installed
a new CD Burner, as you say.
I am using VIA myself in conjunction with my motherboard and audio is an
integral part of it. If you have the software, try un- and reinstalling,
starting with the audio. See if that helps.

Harry.

I'll give anything a try. I've tried viaarena.com without
success.

How, in simple terms do I do that?????????????????

Thanks again, Rick.

www.viaarena.com carries a load of drivers. Get the

right ones for your
chipset (of course); the later ones are called something

else (can't
remember right this minute) but the older ones are still

called 4in1's.

IIRC it was taking something like 140 seconds to load the

audio
components?... why not just use the M$ (default) ones and

see what's up.

Thanks, Rick.

Nothing going outbound in firewall.
No conflicts in Device Manager.
Safe mode runs ok since the systray doesn't load.

I'm off to the software forum to see why my new CD

burner
(Sony) works but the software included (Nero express 6)

is
so amazingly slow. If you thought by boot log was

slow,
you should see this program run ;-).

-----Original Message-----
If I'm reading that right, looks like the normal M$

audio

stuff is

taking a whale of a time to load... does your firewall

report anything

trying to go outbound ? Getting any resource conflicts

in DeviceManager ?

As far as which driverset to use... dunno, but they say

that 4.3x is the

sweet spot for VIA 4-in-1s for Win9x, if that helps any.

Hmm... how does it run in SafeMode ? If OK, then I'd

bet

on "Callwave"

gumming things up.

I've suffered from a slow boot for some time now. It
takes about five minutes to boot. The delay is

waiting
for the system tray to load. What loads is:
-Volume
-Callwave (internet answering machine)
-Spyware Guard
-AVG anti-virus
-Zone Alarm Free
-Lexmark printer

I've run Bla.exe a number of times asking what to do.
Sound drivers was the popular response. VIA is what I

use.

I downloaded the latest versions from the VIA site I

was

pointed to, removed current drivers in safe mode,

pointed

the system to the new drivers upon reboot, but still

no
joy.

A recent visit to the Windows Update Catalog revealed
newer drivers and new hope.
