Default Printer and Mouse Problems

I recently installed a new HP printer, using my USB port
for the first time. Since then I have experienced two
problems. After using the computer for a while the
computer hangs for a few seconds when I click the mouse
to execute certain commands. An example is clicking
the "x" in the upper right corner to close a document.
Not all mouse commands have this problem. I also noticed
that the clock in the system tray is running slow - loses
15-20 minutes per day. When I reboot everything is fine
for a while.

A few days ago I deleted three printer-related HP
programs from running in the background upon start-up -
Port Resolver (Hpbpro.exe), Status Server(Hpboid.exe),
and Status Client (a long file name associated with the
HP toolbox and ending in statusclient.exe). Since then I
have not experienced any problems.

Have I solved my problem or is there something wrong that
still needs to be fixed (e.g. replace CMOS battery)?
What could have been causing the problem in the first
place?

CMOS battery:
This doesn't appear to be the cause of your problems as this only come into
play when the PC is switched off and you say that it lost time whilst running
rather than when powered off.

It would appear from your report that at least one of the HP application that
you have now removed was the cause of your problems which I suspect were due
to the applications(s) involved "stealing" clock cycles thus causing the PC
clock to seem to slow down. This same reason could also be the likely cause
for the problems you experienced with your mouse. Just out of curiosity what
speed is your cpu/processor? I also suspect the problem was due to one or
other of the two status applications polling the printer too frequently.

Thanks for what I feel is a post that could well be of use to others.

Thanks for your feedback. For your info, my computer has
a Pentium III, 800 MHz.
