Windows Help System font problem
Win98 SE Op.Sys.
While deleting fonts from a backup CD, I had my desktop fonts change. I found that not only had the fonts been deleted from the CD, but also from my windows fonts folder. Quite a surprise! I have reinstalled the missing fonts, and re-set various font options via the Setting/Control Panel/Display/Appearance tab options, but I have been unable to change the font used in the left hand pane on the Windows help program, (and all the programs that use it). All entries in the LH pane now display using 12 pt Symbol font, which is unreadable. I have reinstalled both winhelp.exe and winhlp32.exe just in case the font reference is hard coded into either of them, but as this made no difference, I guess the font is determined by a registry setting. I've searched the registry and found numerous references to the Symbol font, but can't determine which (if any) of these are actually used by the help program. Could some kind soul please tell me which key I need to modify to get a readable font back? As I've only recently found the help system was affected, I don't want to use backups of the registry files. Many thanks for any help given. Norm |

Windows Help System font problem
Norm,
... I have been unable to change the font used in the left hand pane on the Windows help program, (and all the programs that use it). All entries in the LH pane now display using 12 pt Symbol font, which is unreadable. The font that Microsoft uses in the left pane of its help files is MS Sans Serif (sserife.fon). This font is used by default when no other font is specified by the help author at design time. I have reinstalled both winhelp.exe and winhlp32.exe just in case the font reference is hard coded into either of them, but as this made no difference Unfortunately this won't help, as these two executables are associated with a different help format (.hlp) than the HTML Help format (.chm) with which you're having problems. The executable associated with .chm files is hh.exe. -- Pete (Microsoft Help MVP) |

Thank you soooh much, Pete.
You have saved hair I can ill-afford to lose!! I had missed reinstalling the "Sans" version of the serif font. My help files are back to normal now. Again many thanks for your time.
