Default Profiles and Critical updates?

Apoligies if this has been covered in previous posts.

To try and keep it brief.

My daughter has been given an old PC on which
win98 is installed. We do not have the original Win98 installation
disk, but a "reset" disk.
The PC/system is seemingly in good shape with no obvious problems,
with some excellent software installed, but in many instances no
back-up disks.

First question:
I maybe missing something as an XP user, but I understood that MS
had withdrawn "support" for Win98?
However, my daughter reports she has received the onscreen prompt
that "Critical updates were available" etc, and that she has downloaded
and installed them, I then tried the "Windows Update" link, and it indeed
scanned the system and reported a whole heap of "recommended" updates?
What support has MS withdrawn for Win98? It seems fully supported, am I
missing something?

The other question....
the PC was supplied with a "Profile" configured, it dosen't require a
password, just click on the OK button for the Profile, or cancel button
for Win98 to load normally.
The problem being the best software is installed in the "Profile".
By Control Panel/Passwords we click on the tabs and select "All users..
same settings" etc, Win98 will load normally, but the best software is
still not available, only if we reset the "Profile".
We have tried RIGHT clicking the Start button and selecting Explore,
we can locate some of the "Profile" applications, and select for a
shortcut to be sent to the Desktop, then drag to a folder so the software
is sort of available, but Not all? We have had very limited success.

In control panel, under "Users", the "Profile" is listed.
If we select the option to Delete the Profile:
A) Will we lose all the software that is associated with that Profile?
B) Or, will as we hope, Win98 will load normally with full access to
all software installed?

Many thanks in advance for any guidence.

Default Profiles and Critical updates?

open windows explorer
navigate down the left hand pane to \windows\profiles\[profile]\start menu
where [profile] is tha name of the profile 'with all the good programs'
DO NOT operate on \windows\start menu
right click and 'copy' the start menu subfolder
right click the \windows folder and select paste
and all the shortcuts and subfolders for \windows\profiles\[profile]\start
menu will be copied to \windows\start menu and be available when the profile
is deleted
