For some reason, my internet explorer is not working when I click on the
icon on my desktop. It will work when I sign onto AOL but to just get onto
the internet, it won't open and it freezes up. I can't even shut down
through the "start" menu. I have to actually push the button that turns the
computer on and off. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and what I
can do to fix it? I connect to the internet via a dsl line. I tried
re-installing it but it still doesn't work.

Any help will be appreciated.

IE has a repair option which you might like to try to see if it clears the
problem.
Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. On the
window that opens, click Tools on the tool bar. Select "Repair Internet
Explorer" from the drop down menu. When that opens there will be two
options. One is to repair and the other is to add new components. Select
repair and follow the prompts. When the PC restarts it makes IE the default
browser, so if you need AOL to be the default, open its settings option in
the tool bar and change it.

Hello Alan,
Whenever I access IE 6, my IE window doesn't open fully and generates an
error message. If I either select the maximize screen option or I click and
drag to open up the screen, IE generates an error message. I've tried
repairing IE 6 from its Repair Dialog box, but it says it'sinoperable. I've
reinstalled my Windows 98, but the problem persists. Please help!

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Windows 98 has earlier versions of IE built in. To run IE 6 it has to be
downloaded from Microsoft and the install replaces the earlier version.
Please check all of Frank's advice as you may well have some programs
running that are corrupting things.
What I would do is look at the add/remove section in control panel to see if
any element of IE 6 can be removed. Normally an online upgrade to 6 can be
uninstalled by reverting to an earlier version from the Control Panel. If it
can be removed, then uninstall 6 and run IE5. Then go to Microsoft and
downloaded IE6 with the latest Service Packs and the install.
