Default Blank Monitor

I would like some suggestions, please, to try on the following problem.
Computer is a HP, model 6353, about 8 years old. Has windows 98 OS. Computer
and monitor was working fine but owner bought a new computer with XP. The old
monitor was hooked up to the new XP computer, it worked fine, and the the old
computer was set aside for approx. two weeks. The owner of the computer
bought a new monitor for the XP computer and she decided to set her old
computer again with the original monitor. After setting up the old computer
again with the original monitor, which had previously worked fine with, the
monitor will not come on and stays blank. When turning on the computer the
green light on the monitor will come on for a short time, as if it going to
turn on but then will go back to amber and stays blank even thought the
computer is on and running. The monitor works fine on the XP computer so the
monitor is good. The offending computer has on board video. When the old
computer was connected to the new monitor which is on the XP computer, the
words "---No imput signal----" showed on the screen. To me this would
indicate that the onboard video is not working. Since the computer is old the
owner does not want to put much money in it. Even though I think the onboard
video is not putting out any signal and is possibly bad, I cannot be 100
percent sure that this would cure the problem. Does anyone have any ideas of
any others things that I may try without costing any money. I advised the
owner of the computer she may have to buy a used AGP video card and see if
that takes care of the problem. Since the monitor stays blank I cannot even
disable or uninstall the old drivers if she does decide to buy an AGP video
card. I know that this is the recommended procedure before installing another
video card. Since I cannot see anything on the monitor I cannot enter the
bios or go into safe mode. I tried holding down the control button and also
by tapping the f8 button but I could not get into safe mode. I also tried
getting into the bios by hitting f10 button, old compaq computer, but again,
to no avail. Could the computer with the XP OS have done something to the old
monitor to where it would work on XP but not on the original computer. I do
not see how anything could have happened to the old computer that would cause
this problem since it not being used since the owner had purchased the XP
computer Thanks for any suggestions

At this point we need to verify the wire connections
(both power and data) to be sure the connectors
are not faulty. This is most easily done by setting
up both the XP and 98 PCs with monitors we believe
work OK, then swapping the monitor connectors of
the two PCs. If the PCs do not work the same, this
suggests one (or more) of the connectors should be
replaced with new.

the fastest thing to check for is bent pins inside the connector, they are
soft and could have been easily bent removing/refitting the plug

That's a strange one & is reminiscent of the occasional thread in which just moving a machine from one location to another causes a boot problem. I think AlmostBob could have it. Also, did you try using the same cable that works with the new machine?

I guess jiggle the connector at the computer end. Open the box, & poke around inside. Un/re-plug all connectors. Blow out the dust bunnies.

But there may be something about computers that just doesn't like to be moved or shut for extended periods of time.

I will try to answer all the questions within this one post. I have checked
the pins in the data cable and they are fine. They are all straight. The
owner of the computer was the one that advised me that the old monitor worked
fine on the new computer but will not work on the old computer. At this time
I do not know if she used the new cable or the original cable when she
checked the monitor with the new computer. I have two monitor cables here at
my house that I will try. The "no input signal" that shows up on the new
computer does not show up when the old computer is hooked up to the old
monitor. I have removed and reset the cable several times, but to no avail.
Like I said in the first message I cannot get anything to show up on the
computer to be able to get into safe mode or into the BIOS so I can not do
any troulbleshooting. I will try a new power cable on the monitor which I
doubt very seriously will help. After that the only thing I know to do is to
tell her to buy a video card and we can try that. Her computer has one open
PCI slot and one open AgP slot that we could use. Thanks for everyones help.

Her computer has one open
PCI slot and one open AgP slot that we could use.- snip.

That's what I would do.
Install an AGP video card.
Since the PC has a slot for one.
PCI video cards are tricky to install if an AGP port is available.
Good Luck!

You are welcome. Well, ensure she is plugging the monitor into the right connector on the old computer & screwing it in, if it has those screws. Don't forget to un/re-plug ALL connectors inside & outside of the box, before spending money!

| The "no input signal" that shows up on the new
| computer does not show up when the old computer is hooked up to the old
| monitor.

The old monitor may be too old to have that feature. But the new monitor connected to the old computer is likely telling the truth. And the old monitor is fine when it gets a signal from the new computer. Both monitors are fine. Don't forget to ensure the same monitor cable is being used.

Default Blank Monitor

Thanks PCR. I personally tried the old monitor with the old computer and the
data cable was completely in and the screws were tightened but it did not
make any difference. I am satified that the problem lies within the computer
but I cannot get anything to show up on the screen so there is not much I can
do to troubleshoot it. Moatt, I will advise her if she decides to buy the
video card to be sure to buy the AGP one. I also forgot to mention that there
is not any beeps associated with this problem either. If she is availabe I
will go over again and try one of my monitor power cables even though I am
certain it will not work. I will do it to remove that one percent doubt that
I have that it is the cable. Thank you.

|
|

Since the monitor stays blank I cannot even
| | disable or uninstall the old drivers if she does decide to buy an AGP video
| | card. I know that this is the recommended procedure before installing another
| | video card. Since I cannot see anything on the monitor I cannot enter the

| | monitor to where it would work on XP but not on the original computer. I do
| | not see how anything could have happened to the old computer that would cause
| | this problem since it not being used since the owner had purchased the XP
| | computer Thanks for any suggestions
