RAM utilization
Hello!
My Rogers self healing software, is indicating that my RAM/memory utilization is high. The application says that I "may want to" consider removing or disabling some of the applications that launch when Windows starts. I'm wondering if I need to buy more "memory" ? My hard drive space/storage shows as being fine though. Any suggestions? thanks |

Donna,
Other than for Roger's what exact problems are you having that might suggest you have memory problems. Remember that memory is there to be used and if not 100% used is simply being wasted - that is why you bought it. Rather than relying on Roger's what does Win Me's system monitor have to say about your swap file usage? If you are running with a large swap file then additional memory might be beneficial but if not then you won't really benefit from the addition of more RAM. What Roger's is telling you though is good advice. Not because having unnecessary applications being launched each time you boot your system is going to use memory but rather because they use a far more scarce resource which you can measure using Win Me's Resource Meter. Resources refers here to two small 64KB stacks used by 16 bit applications and libraries whose size is fixed and independent of the amount of actual memory installed. A start up figure of 65-80% free isn't bad and you can expect to see problems when opening new windows or starting applications if free resources drops into the low teens (or lower) at which time you will start to see warning messages about the need to close (rather than minimize) open windows before opening new windows or applications. -- Mike Maltby Donna wrote: Hello! I dont have the system monitor or resource meter installed. I tried
installing them using the add/remove/windows setup, but I'm missing files. (sysmon.cnt and rsrc16.dll) My PC is Dell and it came installed. I do have some disks that came, but none seem to be the Windows Millenium one. I do have one labelled for reinstall of Windows ME, but it couldnt seem to locate the files on there when I browsed..... In ,
Mike M had this to say: My reply is at the bottom of your sent message: Remember that memory is there to be used and if not 100% used is simply being wasted - that is why you bought it. I know this sounds corny (or it should unless you're a geek and then it still should probably sound corny) but thanks for saying that clearly. Few people know what it means nor the implications of that, so really, thank you. The statement there is actually far better than one I could word in defense against RAM "cleaning" utilities. -- Galen - MS MVP - Windows (Shell/User & IE) http://dts-l.org/ "My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence." - Sherlock Holmes |

Look for the file BASE2.CAB which will normally be in either C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or C:\Windows\Options\Install. Once located, when Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup asks for the Win Me CD point it at the folder containing BASE2.CAB as this folder should contain all of the Win Me cab files required by Windows Setup. -- Mike Maltby |

Well whattya know.
Worked... they are now installed. Now I will try to find out how to interpret what they are telling me... Thanks I will probably post back with what I find..... "Mike M" wrote in message .. . Better, if you are familiar at working with the registry, is to correct the setup path in the registry. Start Regedit, browse in the left hand column to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup then select the value SourcePath in the right hand pane. Double click and change the data to the folder containing BASE2.CAB and the other Win Me setup files such as C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. Click OK and exit Regedit. This can also be done using TweakUI (if installed). My Computer tab, Special Folders, select Installation Path, click Change Location and browse to the folder containing BASE2.CAB and the other Win Me setup files. Finally click Apply. Now I will try to find out how to interpret what they are telling me... Thanks I will probably post back with what I find..... A large swap file would suggest you might benefit from additional RAM. Low resources would suggest you either need to close programs and perhaps reduce the number being launched when you boot your system. -- Mike Maltby |

The swapfile size if 183.1 M
The resource meter at the moment says "system 42% user 42% GDI 76%" not sure what it means... and then theres " swapfile in use (between 53 and 73M or swapfile memory (about 180 M) " Maybe you can tell me ! What it means is that you probably have little to worry about regarding
resources although not knowing what and how many application you have running at the time makes analysis from a distance less than easy. As for RAM and the size of your swap file and % swap file in use, again not knowing the amount of physical RAM you have installed and what you might have running at the time makes comments a little difficult but with 53-73MB of swapfile in use doesn't suggest to me that you are likely to benefit that much by installing more RAM. It would help though to know actually how much physical RAM is installed in the system. -- Mike Maltby Donna wrote: The swapfile size if 183.1 M The resource meter at the moment says "system 42% user 42% GDI 76%" not sure what it means... and then theres " swapfile in use (between 53 and 73M or swapfile memory (about 180 M) " Maybe you can tell me ! |

Is that under system properties/performance?
If so I have 128 MB with 40% free "Mike M" wrote in message ...
