Default Flash drives -- Dumb Q

Geez, have I got a lot to learn! That's one reason I enjoy newsgroups.

I have never used a flash drive, though I have seen them over at Fry's. I
think I'd like to try one for primitive backup purposes and portability's
sake. They're certainly cheap enough, and I do have USB 2.0 now.

I understand I can just drag-and-drop data into these things, and the system
thinks of a flash drive as just another hard drive.

My question is this: how fast are these things? Does it take a while to
write data into them, or is it practically instantaneous? And does WinME
automatically detect a new flash drive, or do I have to install some
software? And I suppose you can read and write to a flash drive as many
times as you like.

Thanks for info!!!

Look here for some answers to commonly asked question:

Yes, WinME includes mass storage drivers and all you should have to do is
plug it into a usb port.
It will be assigned a drive letter just like an external drive. You can copy
add/delete files and format the drive.

They are reasonably fast - time depends on size of files - small files are
quite fast -

Yes, you can read/write as many times as you want

More helpful information:

USB 2.0
http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm

WinME does not include USB 2.0 drivers, which are typically included with
the capable device.

And, Mr. McCullar, there are no "dumb questions" in these MS newsgroups.
No one is born knowing any of this stuff.
Please don't hesitate to ask any question.

Indeed Jack.
One of my all time favourite sayings is thatere is no such thing as a dumb
question, only a stupid mistake for not asking!

Good luck,
