Default please. what's a .DLL file?

every time I start up I get a "error starting program"
message. It continues "a required .DLL file MSVCP60.DLL
was not found.

please could someone tell me what this is, have I deleted
it? and how do I get it back?

thanks very much
Miki

Go to this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...asp&SD=MS&FR=0

Do a search for the missing file. Then, work through the various versions
to work out the latest version suitable for your operating system. The
information provided also includes where to get a replacement copy off your
install media.

Dynamic Link Library - basically a collection of common routines that lots
of software call, so that the softwares themselves can be smaller. Since I
suspect from the name that this one is a library needed for MicroSoft Visual
C++ version 6.0, it is possible that a programmer assumed you had it (since
he had), and you don't; some better programme sources do tell you something
like "this software requires xyz.dll file(s) - if you don't already have
them you can get them from here". If you can find out which prog. it is
that is needing that particular .dll (does the error message say? Maybe
referring to it as "module", or something .exe?), which is obviously
something your system is configured to run at startup, then maybe if you go
back to where you got it, there might be a link of this sort (and if there
isn't, I expect such a common file will be available from lots of places, if
I've guess right what it is); alternatively, you may well find that it isn't
something you need to run every time you start anyway (not a lot needs
that!), and you can stop it doing so (or trying to), although that won't
help you run it when you actually do want to.

(You may even find you do already have the file, but in some obscure
directory; if so, you could try just moving or copying it to the Windows
one, or other places Windows looks - I think Windows\system or '32 are
candidates, have a look and see if there are already lots of .dlls there.)
