when trying to use the restore disc that came with the computer this is what
happens. when i start the computer, i get a message that says i ahve a pre release version of windows me and it has expired, and to contact the vendor for a new version. could this be a potential issue as to why i can't restore windows me? after hitting any key, i get a choice of 1. restore windows millenium, or 2. boot to dos prompt from cd-rom. when i try 1, it says the hard drive will be lost, and i can't afford to have that happen. when i press 2, i get the prompt a:\. what do i do from here? your help is greatly appreciated. "Mike M" wrote: zeotch wrote: i must have spoken too soon. now it won't start and i get an error saying there's a system.ini file missing. what should i do? same thing? Yes, scanreg /restore restores the three registry files classes.dat, system.dat and user.dat as well as the two files win.ini and system.ini. What is perhaps more worrying is why system.ini is now missing. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |

This situation is very odd to me, Mike and zeotch!
I find it rather unlikely that any OEM would sell a machine with a pre-RTM, beta copy of WinME. I doubt they could legally obtain it from MS. What is more likely is that the OEM recovery disk has some other Win OS, while the current installed WinME is a beta copy. Examining the recovery CD, viewing the info at control Panel/System Properties, and/or speaking with the OEM may resolve the question. -- Jack E. Since your disk was created and supplied by the company (OEM) that built your PC rather than Microsoft, I would strongly urge you to contact them for assistance. I do dimly recall of having read of at least one other user having seen a similar error message but cannot for the life of me remember what the answer was. The nearest thing I can find of possible relevance is KB272499 - "Error Message: This Pre-Release Version of Windows Has Expired" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272499) where the problem is due to trying to use Win Me Beta 3 which expired on 15 August 2000. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP zeotch wrote: when trying to use the restore disc that came with the computer this is what happens. when i start the computer, i get a message that says i have a pre release version of windows me and it has expired, and to contact the vendor for a new version. could this be a potential issue as to why i can't restore windows me? after hitting any key, i get a choice of 1. restore windows millenium, or 2. boot to dos prompt from cd-rom. when i try 1, it says the hard drive will be lost, and i can't afford to have that happen. when i press 2, i get the prompt a:\. what do i do from here? your help is greatly appreciated. |

Windows Me startup problems
Hi Mike,
I have the same problem. ME keeps starting up in safe mode. When I try normal mode it suddenly shuts down after a few seconds. So for now, I can only go into safemode. I have tried your suggestions, but there was nothing wrong with it. Anything else I can try? I cannot use my USB or network to start transfering files. My CD-Rom is dead as well, so cannot use the discs. At the moment I am zipping files on to my floppy. The whole process goes slowly. Hans "Mike M" wrote: Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? If not try so before continuing. If you are still unable to boot Win Me then dig out your Win Me boot floppy (EBD), put it in the floppy drive, and boot to DOS. Choose either option 2 or 3 from the Menu. At the DOS prompt enter SCANREG and click Enter and let scanreg run and check the registry for errors. When finished remove the floppy and see if you now boot into Win Me. If you are still unable to boot into Win Me use the boot floppy again and boot to a DOS prompt but this time enter SCANREG /RESTORE and click Enter and choose the most recent of the five dates offered that predates your problems and scanreg will restore a backed up copy of the registry from that date. Remove the floppy and you should now be able to boot into Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP zeotch wrote: I can't get Windows Me to startup. I get the startup menu with the choices for 1-normal, 2-logged, 3-safe mode, 4-step by step. It says there's a registry configuration error and to scanreg to correct this error. How can I do this? I have a recovery disc, but when i tried to run that, it said that the recovery disc would erase all the information on the harddrive, which I can't afford to have happen. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem without going to a professional? Thanks for your assistance. |

Windows Me startup problems
Hans,
What changes had you made to your system immediately prior to this problem starting? If the problem is only recent have you tried using system restore and rolling back to a checkpoint created prior to the problem starting? Try unplugging all external devices (usb, parallel and/or serial) other than, obviously, your keyboard, mouse and monitor. Do you still boot to Safe Mode? Let's try and find what might be causing the problem by booting to Safe Mode and then launching MSConfig (Start | Run, enter MSConfig and then click enter). Open the Startup tab and make a note of all the entries and note those which are unchecked (Yes, there should be two checked LoadPowerProfile entries). Now open the General tab and check "selective startup" and check initially just "Load static VXDs". Apply and reboot. How did that go? If OK, then return to MSConfig | General and gradually add back the other startup entries (Process system.ini, process win.ini, load startup group items, load environment variables) rebooting each time. Hopefully you should be able to narrow down where the problem is. Give this a go and then please post back with the results and we will then see if together we can further narrow down the cause of the problem. -- Mike Maltby Hans wrote: Hi Mike, I have the same problem.
