Rundll32 error
My Wife's Win98 computer is giving me fits. In every session the error pops
up "Rundll32 caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32" I've run "Regiclean" and "Easy clean", defragged and scandisk all to no avail. Does anyone have a suggestion what I might try next? "In the Doghouse" |

Rundll32 error
FYI, Registry cleaners are quite dangerous to use. They almost always produce "false positives", and if you let them automatically "clean" the Registry, you're in for a world of hurt. I suggest you go back to those apps you mentioned and restore any backups they made, before proceeding with a proper t-shooting session. Could be spyware or similar. See my article: http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm Ignore the recommendation for ETrust, I need to edit that article. Avast is now my recommendation for Win9x systems. Otherwise, go through all of the suggestions there, finishing up with a visit to http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm If all scans come up clean, then let's see if it's a background program causing the problem. For more detailed explanation of the use of MSCONFIG, see: http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm It is particularly important not to be connected to the internet with no antivirus enabled. Be sure to disconnect the machine from the internet, physically (unplug the LAN or phone cable.) If you can't repeat the problem while not connected to the internet, that itself is a hint as to where the problem is located. 1. In the StartRun box, run MSCONFIG. Choose Selective Startup, then uncheck Load Startup Group Items. Click OK and restart when prompted. Leave the machine alone for a nice long while, until you feel the problem should have repeated. Do you now get the error? If so, go back into MSCONFIG and re-enable everything then post back here. If the problem goes away, continue: 2. Back in MSCONFIG, on the Startup tab, re-enable half of the list. Click OK and restart. Does the problem come back? If so, then the problem app is in the group you just re-enabled, otherwise it's in the group you left disabled. Based upon that info, re-enable all but half of the problem group. Restart, etc. Using this "diagnosis by halving" will lead you to a much more speedy result. When you discover which app is causing the problem, post back for suggestions. -- Gary S.
