Default cannot recognised USB flash memory !

For unknown reason, my Win98 PC just dont recognised some 1G and 2G USB
flash drive. So I tried ordered the brand name that has been worked ok.
Unluckily it does not help. I have a Toshiba 2G that is working fine. So I
ordered that same model. Unforturately, the newly bought USB flash cannot be
recognised.
I dont understand why would that happens ? I now have two USB flash of the
same model. One of it works OK, the other deos not work in the Win98, but ok
in other Win XP pC. I checked it is formated in FAT not FAT32. So is there
any thing I can do to try ?

Windows 98 is not USB friendly. 98SE is a lot better. Suggest you read
information at http://www.usbman.com/
Scroll down to look at the options on the left hand side.

You might want to consider giving the same information to technical support
at the memory maker's web site and see if they have an answer.

Windows 98 will require specific drivers to be installed for each
different make and model of USB device. Some manufacturers are no
longer providing these drivers.

Windows XP (also Windows Me) have built-in support for USB devices and
drivers are not needed for flash drives etc.

Good luck

Default cannot recognised USB flash memory !

Ran into something similar. Background: PC with 98SE/ME/XP Home, all
working well with one Sandisk 1GB USB flash/thumb drive. Upgraded mobo/cpu
on another PC with ME on it. Stripped drivers first, moved hard drive,
upgraded drivers worked fine. Installed XP Home on another partition/3rd
party boot manager. Some recent drivers and 3rd party install software for
this PC were put on the flash drive BY the first PC. Moved the flash drive
to the second PC, used it in the XP Home environment to install the
software/drivers. Worked fine.

Back to the original PC, booted 98SE, put in the flash drive. 98SE could
not see the file system, but could see the flash drive itself. Booted to XP
Home, it saw all on the flash drive. Seemed bogus, tried again in 98SE with
same results. Back to XP Home again, moved all contents of the flash drive
to a partition and folder common to XP/ME/98SE environment. Booted to 98SE,
formatted the flash drive. Copied the common folder contents to the flash
drive. Checked in XP Home and ME, all was well, and remains well to date.

Have seen similar, rare posts in windowsxp.general group. Commonality was
ME/98SE/98 upgrade, or dual boot environment of same. All moved their flash
drives to another PC with similar results.

Same brand and even the same capacity may not be the exact same model
(= manufacturer's part number). The o.p. did not mention anything
about installing drivers.
