Browser Failure & System Restore
I am running ME on a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. On Thursday I
downloaded ME updates from Microsoft, updated AV definitions via my Norton AV 2005, downloaded and installed Foxfire 1.1 (I've been running Foxfire 1.0). I did not reboot, but surfed the web, disconnected from it (dialup), put the Dell in hibernation, and later that night shut down the computer. When I started the computer up the next day, I received an error message shortly after fully booting up to the desktop. The message: 06:00C2:0000Axxx said press Enter to return to Windows of CTRL+Alt+Del to restart. Every attempt to restart led to the same error message. I put the computer in Safe Mode, ran scan disk and disk defragmenter, but the error message re-appeared on bootup. I ran my Dell Diagnostic disk. No problems were detected, but the error message reappeared on boot up. Thinking the problem was the installation of Firefox 1.1, I deleted it via the Control Panel's Add/Remove program. The error message reappeared on startup, so I used System Restore to restore to the previous day. Firefox 1.0 reappeared, but didn't work. I was able to download and reinstall the ME updates and I was able to download again the virus definitions, but they would not install. Explorer 6 and Netscape 7.2 started to load, but then the error message came up again. Except for MS update, Outlook Express & Norton AV update, I can't access the internet. I tried, but was unable to restore the system to an earlier date. Most non-internet related functions seem to work OK. Do you have any suggestions for restoring my internet functions? Any help would be appreciated. Peter |

Thanks to you "heirloom" and all you other experts. I unchecked the
KB891711 entry in MSConfig/Startup, uninstalled 891711 using Add/Remove Programs, and deleted it in the Windows\System\KB891711 folder. The error messages have disappeared. Now Explorer 6 and Netscape 7.2 function and Norton AV 2005 installs its updates. Now all I have to do is wait until there is a new security replacement for KB891711 so I can download and reinstall Foxfire. Until then I'll be using my old Mac to browse the Web. Thanks again. I won't start a debate about whether heirloom is an "expert" or not, but one
will seldom go wrong following his advice if he says he's pretty sure what to do. He's gotten pretty sharp here in the past two years, ... right up there now with Mart and Shane, I suspect. -- Jack E. Hi Peter......
Why not d/l Firefox now......I have been using it for months and it is excellent!! There was just an auto update for security last night. No popups, no spyware, and it has some small features that I really like. As in it deletes the Urls if you don't use them for a couple of days......it also fills in passwords and names automatically. I have only run into one website that wouldn't work with it (besides Microsoft Windows Update) so far.....so rarely open IE. Cheers.....Heather "Peter" wrote in message ... Hi Heather
Sorry gotta come in this one!! Please email me as necessary :-)) As you say Firefox will not access WU. I'm not sure why Firefox is being recommended as an alternative to IE? Hi Puss....
Firefox doesn't allow popups or downloading of spyware.....for one reason. I haven't seen a piece of spyware in either Ad-Aware or Spybot since I started using it. That in itself, is one reason. And you are probably using XP, as most are. But for WinME users, MS leaves you quite up in the air as to whether or not to install these critical updates.....in that they cite vague reasons why it might not be good with WinME. I know I will get *verbally smacked* for that, but I haven't got time to try and figure out all the ins and outs of each and every critical update.........and whether or not I need it. I guess that last one that crashed a lot of computers is an overstated example....but damn glad I didn't download that one in the midst of sorting out this *hybrid ME/XP" computer. I am missing 2 critical updates and 2 non-critical ones.....(don't need a DirectX 9 update.....haven't got it on here.....just 8) Maybe I am not reading the hotfix/patch info properly, but it seems to me that it is a tad vague.....perhaps to push us towards XP?? No, I am not paranoid, but using Firefox is a lot easier. On the antivirus groups, IE users are rare. Most are using Mozilla or Firefox. And traffic is way down on those groups as people gravitate towards them. Eventually the virus writers will start looking for holes in Firefox.....but no viruses so far. Epistle #32......grin. Future is M$ will have an IE 7 sometime this summer and they may write it more "Firefoxlike" than IE6 currently is. In the meantime, while not perfect (it has its own annoyances) Firefox is generally regarded as more secure than IE. Among other things it doesn't run ActiveX (which is my understanding of why WU won't work with it) though there is a plugin for it I think (!) The main reason people like it is it defaults to block popups and is easier to configure than IE. Rick |
