IE6 repair help
I used the Microsoft Upgrade CD from last Feburary to upgrade my OS and
after the upgrade I got a message that IE was upgraded. Lately, I've been having problems with Windows Explorer hanging on shutdown. Knowing that Windows Explorer and IE6 are tied together, I tried using the "fix IE6" in Add Remove Programs. I have Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106IS and Internet Explorer Q828750 installed. When I tried fixing IE6 I got a message that said: ver 6.0.2600.0 of file licmgr10.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 ver 6.0.2600.0 of file pngfilt.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 ver 6.0.2600.0 of file jsproxy.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 Does anyone know why these files didn't get upgraded with the CD upgrade, and further, how I can upgrade these files? I'd like to do the IE6 fix to see if that helps my Windows Explorer problem. Thanks Henry |

Have you been to MS Update since you used the CD?

Drop the Security CD into the CDROM drive while holding down
Shift key until CD spins up which will prevent autorun.inf on the CD from running and give you access to the CD from Windows Explorer. Navigate to CDROM:\Content\Win9x\common\IE6SP1 folder and double click on ie6setup.exe to start the reinstallation of ie 6.00 SP1. Be sure to check all the boxes of all the previously installed goodies that come with ie or it's all a waste of time. When the process is complete and you have rebooted, you should now be able to pass the ie repair 'test' if you'll let me call it that since that what it is primarily. Other than registering files that should already be registered the ie repair thing only verifies that some files are at a minimum version for that ie version and service pack level. A reinstall of ie is always far superior to the repair as files actually get replaced with new ones. No idea why those files didn't make it the first time around. Pretty sure they will the second though. wrote in message ... I used the Microsoft Upgrade CD from last Feburary to upgrade my OS and after the upgrade I got a message that IE was upgraded. I did exactly what you said but the results were the same. When I tried
to do a fix on IE6 I got the same error message: ver 6.0.2600.0 of file licmgr10.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 ver 6.0.2600.0 of file pngfilt.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 ver 6.0.2600.0 of file jsproxy.dll exists but the ver needs to be greater than 6.0.2800.1100 Something is keeping those files from being up-dated and without the correct version, IE6 fix will not work. Do you have any other ideas? Should I try and get those versions somewhere else and put them in place of the older versions, or would that really screw things up? Try an overinstall:
First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline). StartRunIE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer. Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE) wrote: I did exactly what you said but the results were the same. Do you want me to run the IE6Setup.exe from the original installation or
from the SP1 CD? I did the latter with no difference. When I go to the Windows Update I get a couple of security patches that I need for IE6, but they say nothing about the files that I have that are the wrong version. I would think an over-install of IE should do it. Best stick with Bear a

I extracted them from my original Win98 install in C:\Windows\Cabs to a
temporary directory and they were all version 5.xxxx so that won't help. I next extracted them from the Update CD from Microsoft to a temporary directory and they are all version 6.0.2800.1106 just like they are supposed to be. This is the same CD I used to upgrade IE6, so why didn't they get put in place? Is it safe to extract them to their proper place? Henry PCR wrote: I would think an over-install of IE should do it.
