Anybody recommend a digital camera for use with Win98?
Like the subject, anybody know a good camera that I can use with
Win98? I've been using the Motorola RAZR phone which has terrible images, requires WinXP [ptui, ptui, cusre be gone!] Is alright to get by, but images are like 60k and more of a thumbnail image than a real image. I just bought a Vivitar 16Pixel ViviCam S524, which listed the system requirements on the back of the envelope. They left out that you MUST have internet connection to download a huge bulky bloated program, Plus, and this is far more important, model is NOT listed in included CD, call to Customer Service informs that software not available yet, wait 2 weeks and come back to their website ??!!! So, what I need is a camera with decent image capability, that I can download images through the USB port, and be done with it. I don't want to connect to their websites, I don't want to download a program that will take 24 hours to download bia dial-up, I just want a !@#$!# $@%^^ camera! |

Like the subject, anybody know a good camera that I can use with Win98? You should be more specific. Do you mean web-cam? Hand-held still camera? Video Camera? I just bought a Vivitar 16Pixel ViviCam S524, I had a hard time finding any examples of that camera on the web. I think you got the model number wrong. I found this: http://www.biglots.com/p/d/electroni...digital-camera which lists it as model VF524. I can't find any Vivitar camera on the web being listed as model S524. Regarding win-98 compatibility, is there anything more you want to do with the camera via USB other than download the pictures from the camera? If that's all you want to do, then pull the SD-memory card from the camera and insert it into an SD-card reader connected to (or installed in) your win-98 computer. That's what I do with my cameras. If you are dead set on connecting the camera to your win-98 computer via USB, then I suggest installing the Maximus Decim universal USB driver: ========================= Maximus Decim Native USB ver.3.6 * Native (without installation of additional drivers for each type) support USB flash drives, digital photo and videocameras and other similar devices. * Universal Stack USB 2.0 (without installation of additional drivers for each chipsets) with uninstall. 1. Remove ALL drivers USB flash drives. 2. Remove ALL drivers USB 2.0 controllers. 3. Remove ALL USB 1.1 and 2.0 controllers and devices. 4. Remove ALL unknown devices. 5. Install NUSB 3.6 and reboot. 6. After detection new USB 1.1 and 2.0 controllers (if it will occur) too it is necessary to reboot. Download he https://rapidshare.com/files/99235514/nusb36e.exe Or try this direct link: http://rs130p2.rapidshare.com/cgi-bi...uth=0123456789 |

Just get a card reader A good / free picture viewer (and editor) is Irfanview which is a quick download |

I had a copy of nusb33.exe so this must be a later version. However, years ago I installed that Italian USB driver and been happy with it ever since. so will leave in place, as in 'don't rock the boat', eh? As I said this is a NEW model from Vivitar. not listed in the enclosed CD, nor any software available from Vivitar [according to their customer service] The unit looks identical to the ViviCam F524 I did try just attaching it to the WinXP [ptui, curse be gone!] and found the image file right away, so I'll get an SD card and see what happens with that. I haven't been brave enough to attach it to the Win98 yet, but no real need. The only thing I miss with the camera as any form of manual. I have NO idea what most of thesettings are for. However, I did find 'silent' mode and that was rewarding. Right now the memory is ony capable of ONE picture about 156kB .jpg photo, but at least lets me know the set up works. |

Although slower on image acquisition than the 3.??, I like the smoothing filter they added so that a 'blown up' small picture [25kB] looks almost acceptable at full screen.. |

Just get a card reader Card reader? Will try to find one. You don't seem to understand that your camera (like many or ALL digital cameras over the past 10 or 12 years) contain a removable memory card where the pictures are stored. These memory modules are known as "SD cards", and come in several different formats - pictured he http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Cards.svg.png Your camera would have come with such a memory card, but likely it was a low-capacity card (perhaps 256 or 512 mb). Your camera can most likely take a 32 or 64 gb SD-card - which I would advise you to obtain to replace the existing card. SD-card readers come in several different forms. The most minimal is just an adapter that looks like a common USB thumb-drive with a slot on the side to accept the SD-card: http://gheymann.files.wordpress.com/...ard-reader.gif Others are larger - the same size as a 3.5" floppy drive and designed to fit into a floppy drive bay in a desktop computer: http://www.laptopbatteryweb.com/images/EMBOX1.jpg That picture shows one such card reader that also has adapters for SATA hard drives. NOTE THIS: The first version of these card readers are limited to a maximum size 2-gb card. They are not capable of reading cards larger than 2 gb. Many of these readers are still being sold in second-hand thrift or surplus stores - and you do not want to buy one of those regardless how cheap they are! You want a card reader capable of reading cards 4gb and larger. A 4 gb card is SMALL when used in a 16 mega-pixel camera. And as we've been stressing here - there is really no need to try to obtain or install software that allows you to directly connect the camera to the computer. The most common method is to just pop out the SD card from the camera and insert the card into a card reader. |

I can get access to the single photo, through the USB port. Hope I can get access to the file structure of the card when it's lugged in, that would solve a lot. There is NO manual, not even an idea of how to attach the wrist strap! |

Robert Macy unnecessarily full-quoted:
the camera had NO insertable card, Either you don't know which cover, hatch or latch to remove to reveal the SD-card slot, or your camera didn't even come with an SD-card (either in the box or already inserted into the camera). Trust me - you're camera is designed to use an SD-card to store the images. Without it, it can only store ONE full-resolution image in it's internal memory buffer. There is NO manual, not even an idea of how to attach the wrist strap! Look here and tell us if this is what your camera looks like: http://www.vivitar.com/products/1/di...0/vivicam-S524 This shows a Vivitar S-529 camera. It must be similar to yours. Download the manual he http://www.vivitar.com/files_product...era_Manual.pdf Page 4 shows a picture of an SD-card being inserted into the card slot located on the bottom of the camera (probably the same hatch where the battery is located). The manual says that an SD memory card is needed for normal use (just like I already said above) - and that NO SD memory card is included with the camera. |

I wrote: Download the manual he http://www.vivitar.com/files_product..._Camera_Manual... oops - try this: http://www.vivitar.com/files_product..._Camera_Manual... thanks for the URLs! sadly, the S524 does NOT look like the S529, and the [empty] slot is definitely on the SIDE, not the BOTTOM. When I first got the CD, I plugged it in , and selected the model ViviCam S529 [thinking that that sounded close] and a picture came up too different, so went back and selected ViviCam F524, and that looks identical. According to the info page the internal memory is supposed to be huge, but not in the S524. I wonder if there is sound in the S524, like there is in the S529? Armed with your URL, I modified the end of the line to read, F524, but the URL still took me straight to the S529 ?! Plus, being out here in rural, using dial up, the site of course took over 6 minutes to remove the 'blank' screen and show me that the image/ information is NOT what I wanted. . |
