Many centuries ago I once knew (due to the graciousness of a poster
in a forum such as this), a way to add the "open with" so it appears
any time you right click on a file. It's been so long since I've
need that info I've forgotten how to do it. Can anyone provide that
procedure - I'm thinking it was a registry edit but I just can't
remember.

Shift | Right Click will give you Open With in the context menu on a
case by case basis.

This site I found it with a Google search on "add open with right
click context menu" has a registry edit it says will add Open With
permanently. I haven't tried the hack so offer it as-is:

Didn't work for me, and the instructions couldn't be literally
followed regarding copying the value, although you can still do it.
Note: there is this statement in the registry tips contents page (
http://www.activewin.com/tips/reg/ ):
"Note: All the tips are labeled properly so that nothing will go
wrong." What a relief.

Just to follow up on this, my experience was that the hack both here and at
dadiOH's location put the command in the context menu but but in both cases
clicking it produced an error box. When I used shift, right click, the same
command was brought up (so that it appeared twice on the menu), but this one
brought up the box with the applications.

I forget, for the moment, how to do that, but here's a little app I'd
try, if I was in the market. If you do try it, please give us a report,
OK?

Seems no takers, so I tried it. It does what it says I suppose, but you
would have to configure the list of applications that you want to use to
open a file with. I can't imagine it being easier than highlighting the
file by clicking it once, then holding the shift key and right-clicking,
unless you have an extraordinary amount of files you need that for everyday.

The registry edit that Luke posted
(http://www.activewin.com/tips/reg/menus_2.shtml) does work, the
drawback being that it only shows up on "unknown" files, so for a file
that you already have associated with a program, you would still need to
use the hold shift & right-click method. Perhaps there is a way to add
it to the registry so that it always shows up, if anybody wants to play
around with it.
Here is the registry entry created:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\shell\openas\command

with this as the value:

C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1

I found some time to play with this. For the little it's worth, for me
the reg edit I found a-googling _does_ give an Open With command on
the right click context menu on files with associations.

That edit in HKCR and dadiOH's identical edit in HKLM both put the new
keys and value in both branches. I suppose anyone who understands the
registry would know this :-).

Changing the value of "%1" to "%0" did not work, for me, to default
"Always use this program to open this type of file" to unchecked.
Drats!

I'll stick with Shift | Right Click.
