WMP icon

The icons for audio/video files keep changing from the old ones for wmp7 and
the new ones for wmp9. Any idea how to keep them from dong this?

Delete the shelliconcache file from Safe Mode, per the instructions he

Or,
Click StartSettings Control Panel Display Appearance tab:
Click the "Item:" drop-down list and select "Icon"
Note the current icon size in the "Size:" box next to that.
Change the size, click Apply.
Change the size back to what it was, click OK.
And,
Find the file named shelliconcache (it has no file extension), in the Windows
folder, and delete it or rename it to shelliconcache.bak, then re-boot.

Or,
If you have TweakUI installed, click Start Settings Control Panel TweakUI
"Repair" tab, select "Rebuild Icons" and click Repair Now.

Download and install TweakUI1.33:

Follow the installation instructions on that web page.


Following that, setting the Max Icon Cache setting in the Registry to 2048 would be
good preventive practice:

Thanks. Not sure if the resize did the trick or not. I didn't check to see
if the icons where correct before I resized and resized again. They where
correct after the resize and before I renamed the folder. I thought windows
would rebuild the shelliconcache folder, but on rebooting, only the folder
with the added extention is present. I quess I could remove the extention and
see if the problem returns. I see that the fix for Win 95 is the resize, as I
said maybe that's all i needed also. I will check out the link for setting
the icon cache.

The shelliconcache file will not be re-created until after you re-boot again at
least once, or longer. Don't remove the extension on the renamed old one, or you
will just re-create the old problem.

It was just to satisfy my curiostity to see if a resize alone would fix the
problem the same as it does in Win 95. But, seeing the folder has been
recreated, it's just not worth the time of moving files. Just curious is all.

About 18 months ago, I discovered that the ShellIconCache file
was not recreated by rebooting IF I used a Desktop shortcut to reboot.

It was only recreated after I used the Start button to shutdown/reboot.

I don't know if that scenario fits your situation,
but that's what I encountered.

Thannks for your input. As mentioned in a previous reply to Glen, the folder
has been recreated. It came back on the second reboot. I can only shut down 1
way , the start button, or in case of a freeze up, the on button on the
compuer. I was just curious as to wheather or not a resize alone would have
solved the problem, just in case I encounter it again. BTW the recreated
folder is about 1/2 the size of the old one.

As it stands, I have no real problem, just a curious mind.
