Default Boot Record & NAV 2001

Trying to figure out something for a friends computer, he is running Windows
98, and Norton AntiVirus 2001, whenever he attempts to do a virus scan, it
will not scan the boot record ot the master boot record while in Windows. It
says the drive is unavailable, but if you do it in DOS it works just fine.
The rest of the scan in Windows works perfectly, unsure of what to do.

I've got v2001 on my 9x partition as well.

I vaguely remember something about that at one time, but will have to think
about it again to remember.

You can always uncheck that option in Options Manual Scan, Master & Boot
records and retick it, etc... ...I'm trying to remember what it was though
that would lock them... ..I will sleep on it to remember.

Maybe even a reinstall but that may be overkill just to solve the issue.

Believe such would misidentify such as changes. If the user wasn't familiar
with such, he or she could wipe out a 3rd party boot manager as an example.
Normally in the mbr. Similar with a new install of another OS like Win2k or
XP acting as boot manager. Resident in the partition's boot record instead.

besides the suggestion I've already given yesterday..
..my brain is drawing a 'not remember' card today.
I tried to search for some to jog my memory or get some answers, but I
don't have enough time to research it for you, very sorry, however here's a
start for you to ask around at these forums and/or search them to see if
you can get some hits.

Default Boot Record & NAV 2001

Okay thank you for the link Rob.

At first without realizing it when I replied to your original post, my NAV
was also affected, but since I do not inoculate my boot records (option
available on the tab Options Other Inoculation Inoculate boot records)
...I did not get that error; however the short of it all - when doing a
manual scan it freezes my system in other ways too.

I doubt Symantec will ever fix this whole issue now - actually I think they
made the change to move out 2001 on purpose as a forceplay.
My subscription time was up not long ago anyway.

Because I'm an avid tracker and partition image user I have the
availability and was able to easily isolate what changes were made and
revert just my NAV 2001 back to the last good i32 available which is
20060705-018-i32.exe (intelligent updater package) which this one was just
before they made their changes; however, naturally Symantec made it so that
it was not backwards compatible (meaning you just can install that older
distributeable definition package and have everything be fine again) I
probably could make a file/registry install and write-up for people to be
able to change their systems back to the July 5th date to be able to work
normal again, however it would be a moot point since going forward they
would increasing be susceptible to new viruses; I won't be a party to that.

I have always used the exceptional NOD32 antivirus on my W2000 & WXP
partitions, and since it works on W98 too I will just install it there.
I only kept NAV2001 on Win98SE because it was one of the last
nice programs that Peter Norton's crew had a hand in that worked really
well, before Symantec took over and completely disgraced every
single thing they touch since then - it's beyond comprehension the
company and support ineptness, not to mention the excessively
clumsy large registry footprint on all their products that still work like
crap, as compared to let's say something like NOD32 footprints simplicity.
It's a no contest. Goodbye NAV2001, it's been fun while it lasted.

Keep up posted though Rob if you hear anything new, thanks.

Rick
