Bad CRC and Boot Record Problems
I was having problems with my emachine ETower 500ix, WIN 98. The screen
kept getting frozen too many times. So, I decided to format the hard drive. During the process I noticed several error messages as follows "inflating: c:\Programs.............file name...... Bad CRC file name (Should be ........) Run-Time error R6002 Floating-point support not loaded. Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose, Command prompt only, and run SCANREG." I didn't know how to do it, so I tried to format again, and got the same error messages. When the computer restarted, I got a new message "Searching for Boot Record from CDRom...Not Found. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy...Not Found. Searching for Boot Record from IDE-0....OK" Next line it only shows a blinking courser. I have an average knowledge in computers, so please be easy on me. HELP!!!! |

I would recommend a comprehensive hardware diagnostic test, as chasing
software problems that are really faulty hardware is a futile chore. Start with a decent RAM test, then do a thorough hard disk drive test. You can use any generic RAM diagnostic, but your best hard disk drive test is probably the one provided by the manufacturer of your hard disk drive. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Rancho Familia" wrote in message ... I agree with Jeff.....I recently worked on a couple of systems with similar
symptoms. One had bad RAM; the other had a bad slave CD-ROM drive (there were two installed) that prevented booting. Thanks for the great info. However, I followed every step according to
DocMemory PC Diagnostic Software V1.45a. I got as far as step 2.0 Installation. After restarting the computer, I got the following message: "Searching for Boot Record from CDRom...Not Found Searching for Boot Record from Floppy...OK Non-System disk or disk error Replace and strike any key when ready" Does this mean that A: drive is not reading the floppy? Probably means that the floppy is corrupt. It recognizes the disk as a boot
disk, but when it tries to actually load, it fails. Try again with a different floppy. Then again, it could be a bad drive or whatever else is wrong with your system. -- Gary S. OK, I tried a different floppy, and it worked. However, I ran two RAM tests
(Simmtester and Windows Memory Tester - couldn't figure out MemTest86+) and a thorough hard disk drive (manufacturer)test. None made a difference. Would this test (Hard disk drive) tell if the CDRom drive has a bad slave? I noticed that during these tests the "Searching for Boot Record ..........." for CDRom was not found, but the floppy was OK. Any other ideas! "Gary S. A CDROM doesn't have a "bad slave". Master/Slave refers to the position of
drives on an IDE controller. There are several ways to handle this differentiation, but I don't see that as being your problem. "Searching for a boot record" in a CD drive will only be successful if there's a bootable CD in the drive. But this is not part of your original problem, I don't think... The original message from you indicated some major problem in the hardware. Or maybe not. It's an eMachine, not known for highest quality components. I suggest you reformat and try to install again. But first, describe in detail what procedure you use to reformat and reinstall. Step by step, and especially telling us what the CDs you use are labeled as. Lastly, if this is a hardware problem, it may simply be that it's dirty and overheating, fans not doing their job, contacts loosening, and any number of other possible hardware issues that don't actually include bad hardware, per se. Computers get dirty and fail because of that dirt. Installation is a relatively long set of high-intensity procedures that work a computer hard, and you say this system already had problems. Perhaps what you need to do is take this machine to a knowledgeable tech and have it serviced--or maybe stop throwing good money after bad and get a new machine, perhaps something not so cheap. -- Gary S.
