Explorer.exe
I have a Compaq Presario 7360 with Windows 98 Second Edition.
One day I booted up the computer as normal, the password screen came up and I entered the password. An error message occured after entry and it looked like this: Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe at 0167:00401f31. Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=0167 EIP=00401f31 EFLGS=00010246 EBX=00000001 SS=016f ESP=0080ff1c EBP=0080ff24 ECX=c15cd5c0 DS=016f ESI=00000000 FS=2847 EDX=0080ff2c ES=016f EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 8b 08 50 ff 11 8b 45 08 50 8b 08 ff 51 08 8b 45 Stack dump: 00401ee0 0080ff2c 0080ff64 00405cac 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00404436 0059fc30 815f1d4c 00000000 00000000 00000000 0000ffff 7ff41fcb Now this is the only thing that pops up after I log in my username and password. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Posted using the http://www.windowsforumz.com interface, at author's request Articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards Topic URL: http://www.windowsforumz.com/Applica...ict552248.html Visit Topic URL to contact author (reg. req'd). Can you start in Safe Mode, or does the same error occur?
-Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. OR - Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu. -Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. If Safe Mode causes the same error, try restoring the Registry from a backup dated just prior to when the problem began: -Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. OR - Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu. -Use the arrow keys to select "Command Prompt Only" and press Enter. -Type the following and press Enter after each line: smartdrv scanreg /restore Follow the prompts and select most recent rb###.cab file dated prior to the problem. The backup files will be listed in rb###.cab format, and dated. The ###'s in the file names won't be in date order. Don't use the one named rbbad.cab. Don't restore a backup dated more than a couple of weeks old. I noticed that you are posting through WindowsForumz.com.
